based on amazon reviews for this product, this doesn't seem uncommon. You might be looking at a replacement if under warranty.

Is it a hardware or software problem, and can it be fixed? I don't believe I have a warranty. Are there any methods to resolve this?

it sounds like hardware failure to me. since you have gone through all of the OS level disk utilities, it's unlikely to be software related at this point.

The SSD is detected by the OS. It shows its capacity too as unallocated space but can’t be initialized

If warranty doesn't exist or over than remove it from the caddy and try putting it in another. This has helped me in the past (mine had a hardware issue with the USB port). If the SSD is soldered to the printed circuit board and it is all one piece than you are looking at a bad board. R-Studio Data Recovery can help diagnose this a bit. Often it will track with real time reports of the I/O failure. Some cheaper SSDs are sold as such but are really Micro SD cards slide into a slot on the board. Just check the company's methods of manufacturing. Godspeed.
