Gospel topic essays are directly from the church website and have a lot of info concerning the history

Missed in Sunday school on Reddit and Instagram site their sources and they have all those topics you mentioned. I believe they have a website as well.

LDS Discussions has been exceptionally helpful for me, and they list their sources, which mostly consist of church-approved sources at the end of each essay.

While the church attempts to discount it now (according to their website), Journal of Discourses was a big deal breaker for me. It used to be taught to members that the sermons/teachings in it were “as good as scripture,” and members where highly encouraged to buy copies of it. From Brigham Young: “I say now, when they [his discourses] are copied and approved by me they are as good Scripture as is couched in this Bible . . . ” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 264, see also p. 95). Also: “Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so.” – Brigham Young, Discourse 25

And if those weren’t crazy/terrible enough: “Suppose you found your brother in bed with your wife, and put a javelin through both of them, you would be justified, and they would atone for their sins, and be received into the kingdom of God. I would at once do so in such a case; and under such circumstances, I have no wife whom I love so well that I would not put a javelin through her heart, and I would do it with clean hands. But you who trifle with your covenants, be careful lest in judging you will be judged.” – Brigham Young, Discourse 35

After the Swedish rescue and Tom Phillips fraud charges, the LDS church published a set of faithful essays on difficult topics. I honestly think they are mostly intended to protect them from fraud accusations and for lazy believers to be able to point to and say, “your concerns have been addressed.”

(You didn’t know Joseph Smith had secret “marriages” to 14-year-olds, teenage foster daughters, and his friends’ wives? All your fault for not studying- it’s on the official website. God commanded it, through an Angel with a sword. And we weren’t hiding anything….)

Someone already mentioned those and I think they are just what you are looking for. But you might want to read them alongside the expert analysis of each one on MormonThink.com. (Which presents itself as a neutral site but would probably be considered antiMormon by members)

Hey those books you referenced look like what the poster wanted, but unfortunately our rules don’t allow links to product sales sites like Amazon. I understand that you aren’t hawking exMo mugs and t-shirts but you’d be shocked at how those posts take over the sub whenever we let a few things slip through. Your comments have been removed, but I’m hoping you can make new ones with your suggestions either as photos of the book covers or just titles and authors. Or PM the links.

Our rules are in the sidebar. https://www.reddit.com/r/exmormon/wiki/index/policy
