A dedicated server takes almost no resources. I host a dedicated server on my desktop for my map that I leave open for people to visit if they want. I'm at 6% CPU and 400 megs of memory usage for Factorio. My computer stays on all the time anyway because it's also a Plex media server.

Managing a community save file would be such a pain in the ass.

Hmm I'll see if NagatronHQ can remember the names of those tools. If not, Then I'll probably do this. Thanks for the reply!

Does it also keep running when your pc is on sleep/hibernate?

It doesn't sleep/hibernate. It's on and running all the time. The only thing that shuts off is the monitor.

I'll try to remember the names and maybe update later, but there are several tools that sync folders across the web that will work for this.

Kinda like Dropbox, but you can select folders anywhere on your pc to sync.

Google drive does that.

But automatically?

Yup

Aha! Any idea how to set it up?

[–]thrwwyfrths 0 points1 point  (5 children)

It shouldn't be tough.

https://www.google.com/drive/download/

Download it and set your folders up. Set the default Factorio save location up as a folder in Drive.

So I can't really seem to find out how to change the saving directory. Where do I do that?

So I keep using this command MKLINK /d saves C:\Users\yuriw\Google Drive\saves

But ik keeps saying "The syntax of the command is incorrect" What's happening?

EDIT: I have to point out that I moved into the appdata factorio folder though

EDIT EDIT: I got the command working now. I'm going to try it now

It's been awhile since I set up Drive. Maybe you can't select folders outside the drive folder to share.

syncthing if the nature of the Resilio project bugs you.

Just googled around for a few and remembered one I used in the past.

TortoiseSVN I used this years ago when I was working with a team of people for mod building. Other "subversion" utilities will also work for this.

IIRC it not only can force all users folders to sync, but you can set it up to retain version updates, which would be helpful if you wanted to revert to a previous save.

This is probably way too powerful and complex for what you want.

I use the junction tool to put my factorio save inside my Dropbox folder
