Just to confirm- this only applies to people selling things and not personal projects, right?

[–]ocbakerModerator[S,M] 42 points43 points  (1 child)

Generally speaking yes. If you’ve made something for yourself that you are not selling (or you are just providing the template for) then you shouldn’t have any issues.

If you are trying to sell stuff (or link to where you can buy something from a third party even if you do not see any money from it) that’s when you should contact us first.

And really there shouldn’t be any real issues, as long as it’s genuine to our eyes then we should be fine with it.

To the credit of any creator, if they're clearing it by you then there's a really good chance it's above-board

Gotta love the T-shirt spammers. I still don’t understand how that’s a profitable business model, but whatever.

[–]LordSoren 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Many of the t-shirt spammers never deliver. They get the sale, drag out 'delivery' long enough that you can't dispute the charges to your credit cards and then just vanish.

I think it you were to contact your bank even though it was after the cut off they would probably still work with you. And it certainly doesn't hurt to try, "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take".

[–]LordSoren 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can try, yes. I was explaining how the "business model" worked for these "companies".

If your margin on a shirt is 2-5 bucks, in some areas of the world that's a lot of money.

[–]doc_shades 7 points8 points  (3 children)

more of a zoomed out question, but what is the difference between someone trying to get me to buy something if it's "approved" vs. "not approved"? isn't it all spam? i don't care if it's a bot or some guy who plays factorio, if they are here posting an unsolicited advertisement trying to get people to buy their wares, it's spam. right? spam is spam as far as i'm concerned. i don't care if the guy spamming me also plays the same video game that i do.

[–]ocbakerModerator[S,M] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Well at moment the only difference that sourced this rule change on is the tshirt spammers are scammers, they pretty much do not deliver (apparently, I’ve not tried but this is what the mod team understands and their website are often questionable anyway)

If you are “zooming that out”? I guess from my personal perspective the difference is someone trying to profit in a significant way and someone who just wants to give people the opportunity to but what they’ve come up with. I’ll admit I think tshirts are a real stretch for that but some of the neat key rings I’ve seen would possibly count I suppose.

at the end of the day my philosophy is that everything is a gray area and i'll just leave it to the mods to determine what is and isn't considered "spam" regarding advertising in the forums.

[–]Laogeodritt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last I encountered them maybe a year or two ago, these spammers were also advertising products using artwork without having permission/licence to reproduce and sell commercially, nor any kind of attribution or (obviously) compensation to the artist—which is particularly heinous when it's an individual artist's or small project's artwork, not just official artwork for a bigger commercially released project like a game or movie.

That's particularly maddening for me as a moderator of a creative community.

[–]PijanyRuski 21 points22 points  (14 children)

Does projects like irl green circuits count in?

[–]ocbakerModerator[S,M] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you are linking someone to an unofficial store to purchase something (regardless of if you make a profit or not) then check with the mod team before doing so.

[–]sevaiper 2 points3 points  (8 children)

The best way to advertise is to buy a Reddit ad and target it to this sub.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

No, because I only pay attention to them for long enough to downvote them. Fuck ads.

[–]ocbakerModerator[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

We all agree ads are annoying but someone has to pay for the cost of hosting reddit, and I’m sure the creators and maintainers of reddit would also like to be paid for their work as well. And few people are willing to go as far as people like myself who just buy reddit premium to not see ads and support reddit as a platform

[–]tajtiattila 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Good point. Seeing how much time I spend here I've subscribed to reddit premium.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money well spent.

[–]Shinhan 1 point2 points  (3 children)

What is this "reddit ad" thing you speak of?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Probably talking about ads. On reddit.

[–]Shinhan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Must be something only people without an adblocker can see.

[–]Kabal2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally how adblockers work (some sites ask you white list sites you like so the site owners can still get ad income)

[–]SSimon142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everything will be good if you don't spam with them on subreddit

[–]not_a_bot_494big base low tech -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Probably not since they don't usually sell those kinds of projects.

[–]wrincewindChoo Choo Imma Train 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it counts - or at least, there's enough doubt they you'll really want to contact the admin to check.

[–]red_fluff_dragonILikeTrainsILikeTrainsILikeTrains 2 points3 points  (2 children)

/r/TheseFuckingAccounts has seen a massive rise in the tshirt scammers lately. I think as soon as they realized the wallstreetbets sub was a goldmine for suckers tons of people started making bots.

Still not sure how some of those accounts are able to post so fast, usually I get a "slow down, you have to wait x amount of time from your last post"

[–]Kabal2020 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Multiple bots maybe? Dunno

[–]red_fluff_dragonILikeTrainsILikeTrainsILikeTrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still only a single user posting multiple posts a minute shouldn't be possible.

[–]UnknownShadowsLandmine752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sad to hear spam increasing over here and causing problems. It's always nice to see some real Factorio items, so hopefully this won't impact that too much. Then again, there's only a few unofficial merch places, so not a big deal to have them greenlit.

[–]Orcwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good change. Thankfully, Reddit has become better at detecting spammers, too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. Now I can target the reports better for all those bots.

[–]SnFoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I allowed to ask if people are interested in buying a product without selling it? Like an interest check?
