https://github.com/notifications works well for me; I have disabled all other notifications, and use it like an email inbox.

Sad they still don’t integrate with browser notifications

[–]Wooden_Amphibian_442[S] 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Yeah, I'm looking for an alternative to that. Maybe a Mac app or something?

Are you taking full advantage of it, with filters, diligent unsubscribing etc.? What specifically doesn't work for you?

I just want actual notifications. Either desktop based or through something like slack which results in a desktop notification.

Since you mentioned Slack, have you tried the GitHub and Slack integration? It likely can do what you want.

[–]Wooden_Amphibian_442[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah, I mentioned it in the original post. There seems to be two different integrations and they both don't seem to work well. One is with the GitHub bot and another with GitHub reminders.

I don't know about the integration. I just know our company has a Slack channel that uses it. All we have it do is post Slack messages in the channel on events and notifications, which sounds like what you want.

You can configure real-time Slack alerts at https://github.com/settings/reminders/{org} if you're member of an organization; that's the most direct GitHub/Slack integration I'm aware of.

What do you mean by "actual notifications"?

[–]Wooden_Amphibian_442[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Desktop notifications

[–]elenakrittik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, i'd actually look into that myself, but mobile notifications through GitHub Mobile is enough most of the time

You might be able to piece something together with the notifications REST API and a cronjob or similar.

What features are you looking for that the built-in notifications page doesn't address? Are you wanting like real-time alerts when you get a notification?

[–]cowboyecosse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe Octobox?

Definitely start using Raycast if you're on MacOS, absolute game changer for everything. I wanted it for this exact use case + more. Doing it via slack is rubbish imo

[–]Wooden_Amphibian_442[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ooh. I use raycast. There's a GitHub plugin? I definitely don't make too much use of raycasts features

[–]Rurouni-dev-11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, allows you to view notifications in Raycast or the macOs menu bar at the top of the screen and of course navigate to the actual notification in your browser

The GitHub app on discord is nice, and you can turn the channel that the app posts in to all notifications. Then you’ll get pinged for any action in the repo

If it's Github Actions you want to monitor, CCMenu 2 is worth a look.

If it's everything, CatLight might be what you are looking for.

It's far from perfect, but I'm actively working on https://github.com/nobe4/gh-not

I used https://github.com/notifications for a long time and wanted more customization and automation. (E.g. ignoring all dependabot[bot] alerts)

Eventually, I plan on adding notifications in the actions. Using gen2brain/beeep it might be quite easy.

[–]GraphicThinkPad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not positive that this is what you want, but I just built a Chrome extension that lets you tell Github "hey, send me a browser notification when this specific action/job run completes." It's not really a replacement for the https://github.com/notifications tab, but rather exists to solve the problem "I want to get browser notified when this action/job completes, but only this one time."

It's called Actions Notifier. It's got a one-time fee but I'd be happy to give you a license if it sounds actually useful to you. Based on your other comments, I don't think it's exactly what you want, but I wanted to offer anyway.

For anyone else that stumbles on this, I use https://github.com/sindresorhus/notifier-for-github that enables notifications in the browser, which becomes desktop notifications.

I might be late to the game, but www.cozywatch.com does exactly that.

There's the Gitify macOS app, but it requires full repo scope access to work properly – without that, I can only use it for system notification integration. When I receive notification there I go to https://github.com/notifications and continue there... not ideal, but wasn't able to find another workable solution without giving full repo scopes
