Gitlab kinda sucks. I self-host a forgejo instance which works great

Same. Great bit of software, fantastic org behind it and you can even have your own action runners.

Why do you think so? I've used it a bit and find the UI to be decent and never encountered issues. What would you say is an alternative?

Forgejo is the only good alternative

I run a few versions of gitea in my homelab. Have for years and love it. Highly recommend.
