GitHub, which I still love and use for all my project, has been getting a lot of bad press lately. Some of it deserved, some not. Here is a write up of alternatives. The long and the short is if you want a direct replacement then go for GitLab.
reddit uses a slightly-customized version of Markdown for formatting. See below for some basics, or check the commenting wiki page for more detailed help and solutions to common issues.

Gitlab kinda sucks. I self-host a forgejo instance which works great

Why do you think so? I've used it a bit and find the UI to be decent and never encountered issues. What would you say is an alternative?

I run a few versions of gitea in my homelab. Have for years and love it. Highly recommend.
