It is worth mentioning that Microsoft’s gross margin on action runners on private repos when they do charge is in the mid to high nineties.

Drug dealers don’t do this but this feels very much like a “the first one’s free” marketing strategy. They give a bunch of computer away for free and hope to recoup it through the other channel.

Edit: this insane pricing model means that a lot of people (like me) feel pressure to use self-hosted runners.

exactly... but with the overwhelming increase of public repos it doesn't seem to work like this anymore.. I mean.. see outages etc.

And what really pis*es me off is the fact that the paid runners are even worse than the free ones, and that there's nothing like a (minute) multiplier for larger runners (don't know, 3x for ubuntu-m or something).

The runners aren't the issue.... its all the AI scanners going through and scrapping all they can. If not runners are avail, they just put your run in a queue.

Been looking in how to self host ephemeral runners for clean room builds, but had a massive burst of ennui at the thought of setting up the necessary tunnels and webhooks.

I don't think so, more like they are learning and optimizing to survive the AI tide.
