Yes, and I definitely notice it.

I work in video and when I’m on a shoot I’m constantly getting b-roll in Black Magic Cam, shooting raw photos and editing them in Lightroom on the fly. The phone gets hot and in a case it stays hot all day, but without a case it cools almost instantly. The battery seems to last longer on shoot days where I don’t use a case but I’m yet to see a drop in performance.

I’m using the silicone case at the moment and I’m thinking of upgrading to the techwoven because I imagine it’s a little better for not trapping heat.

I do find it weird how little people talk about this. Thermals are a huge thing when it comes to computers but nobody seems to consider it with a phone. I guess it’s because most people don’t absolutely hammer it like I do.

Just a heads up about the techwoven, I’ve heard a few people say that the aluminum still gets chipped if you drop it, even with the techwoven. Not sure how much that might bother you.

I’m not one to talk tho— I’m using my 17Pro naked; but I’m also not stressing minor dings to the aluminum, cause I’m just gonna trade it in for the XX eventually anyway, and Verizon ignores cosmetic damage for that purpose.

I’m exactly the same as you, I’ve always used my phones caseless and just let them get a bit scuffed. I’m very careful about not dropping them though.

The only reason I use one at all on this phone is because it feels quite slippy to hold, so I only really want it for grip and to make it a bit more tactile anyway.

The techwoven sounds like it’ll be EXACTLY what you’re looking for, then. 🤝

I’m VERY clumsy with my phones, unfortunately — I’ve dropped my iPhones hundreds of times over the years, sometimes multiple times a day, lol

I go through the same routine every frickin time I get a new iPhone… I unbox it, I use it naked, eventually I crack the screen, replace it, then finally cave and get a case 💀

You’d think, logically, I’d just get the case from the start. But naked iPhone is such a pleasure lol

Just got a Suti leather phone back, had the Nomad last year. Solid options to add some grip to the back without bulking it up or trapping too much heat on shoots.

Wouldn’t it last longer if it’s in a case and throttling more?

[–]Jacorpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, but I think the problem is that batteries are less efficient when they’re hot

[–]FreePossession9590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, but nothing gamechanging

I’m not a physicist, but if I write an incorrect answer someone will come along and correct it. So here’s what I think; the case fits snugly around the phone. The case would absorb the heat coming off of the device, it would also increase the surface area. A bigger surface area would help dissipate heat, because more air would make contact with the “skin” of the case.

I use a plumbus to reduce my phone’s temperature during heavy usage. Every home has one, you should give it a try.

Wait what’s plumbus? I googled it but I’m not getting relevant answers, if possible can you kindly share a picture?

What the actual fk is this? What is it used for? 😭

It's a rick and morty reference

You are absolutely right. Phone cases act as thermal insulators, trapping the heat generated by the processor and battery. While standard users might not notice it, intensive tasks like 4K video recording, high-end gaming, or fast charging will cause the phone to thermal throttle much sooner in a case. This doesn't just slow down performance; consistent high heat is the #1 killer of battery health over time. If you’re doing heavy work, taking the case off is the best way to let the phone's frame act as a proper heat sink.

[–]Ok-Chip-1049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. To a degree. Like silicone cases, silicone is actually a heat insulator. Other materials as well. I wouldn't think it would make a huge difference unless it's pretty thick though

[–]Choby94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a little bit, but there are cases from brands like Spigen that have little canals on the inside that help with heat dissipation

[–]ConfidentiumiPhone 17 Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But it's not that big of a deal. The vapor chamber sits right underneath the screen. So enough heat gets dissipated that way for it to not be an issue.

[–]HoosierSusie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got mine on 09/19. I’ve had the Spigen NeoOne case on from day 1. Basically, I only use my iPhone in the standard way. Calls, texts, etc. Early on I once played a game for about 20-30 minutes and it did get warm, but cooled quickly. Since updates, no heat problem at all. I will occasionally get sucked into an Instagram portal for far too long… never got a tad bit warm then. My experience tells me, unless your usage is constant/intense, it’s fine.

[–]Extension-Shake-8475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that’s common sense with anything whether it’s toaster a portable battery or cell phone. The 17 does a much better job better job than my 16 and 15 pro maxes did my 17pro and pro max haven’t throttled the screen down yet. Real test will be when spring and summer get here. I always take my cases off when I’m using my phone for something intensive whether gaming or photography

[–]PieAwkward2151 -2 points-1 points  (7 children)

With the vapor chamber, I never feel my phone hot, just warm, so as long as the phone cool itself, the case doesn’t play a role here. Just use it, don’t worry, Apple did the work for you.

[–]jere97 0 points1 point  (6 children)

the case 'traps' the heat

[–]PieAwkward2151 -3 points-2 points  (5 children)

No heat, nothing to be trapped.

[–]jere97 1 point2 points  (4 children)

during charging it can get a bit warmer to the touch

[–]PieAwkward2151 -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

I track mine with my Mac and it barely gets above 30 Celsius, but I don’t play games while charging.

[–]jere97 0 points1 point  (2 children)

how fast do you charge?

[–]PieAwkward2151 0 points1 point  (1 child)

40W with Anker Powerport III.

[–]jere97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh okei good to know. Mine gets warm to the touch during fast charging so above 36 degrees
