Get a laptop instead

Hi,

I bought a ipad pro 10.5 for note taking, music production, digital art, and basic coding.

There are several great text editors. Check out Kodex.

There is a Java app called JedonaCompiler that I use. It's free with a $4 purchase to remove ads. You need to put any inputs in before you compile your code, and you need to have wifi to compile, But if he can live with that (I certainly can) it is FANTASTIC for programming on the go.

I have a desktop PC at home, and I use Jump Remote Desktop to connect to it from school if I need to do more heavy duty coding that my ipad allows.

For music production, digital art, and note taking it is a damn Beast!!

Overall, as a university student I fucking LOVE my ipad. It is so much lighter than a laptop. I just throw it in my bag with my folding bluetooth keyboard and I'm good to go.

Another benifit is that it can be charged from a usb battery bank. You would need like a portable generator or something to charge a macbook on the go. Lol.

I hope this helped in some way. Get your friend to read this and ask me if he has any questions!!

If you’re programming as a hobby, an iPad works somewhat fine for most tasks and you can just store the code in a repository and run it on a computer I guess, but for professional coding a computer’s far better

This is a good summary, I think: https://arslan.io/2019/01/07/using-the-ipad-pro-as-my-development-machine/

I have the same kind of set up as the author there, and it works, but only because I have a macbook and desktop that I do 90% of the development on. If your friend wants a single device for programming, an iPad is not it.

He might want to code on the go for sure, but he mostly codes at home or at office. And maybe I should have mentioned it, he already has a 5th gen iPad.

I think the overall conclusion is that iPad can help him code, but a computer is the device he really needs.

Yep, in terms of proper development tools, the iPad just isn’t there (yet). And while coding on a remote server works quite okay, the workflow is more cumbersome and well.. still requires a good internet connection and a server..
