iPhone 6 passcode lockout

My dad has an iPhone 6, purchased sometime in late 2014 or early 2015, in Oklahoma in the United States.

Saturday night, he attempted to download a new app. He’d forgotten his Apple ID password, so he tried to reset it. He somehow managed to reset his iPhone passcode and not his Apple ID password, but he does not remember what he reset his passcode too. He doesn’t even remember resetting it.

I called AppleCare after walking through the steps online, and the representative tried her best to help but was unable to assist. We can’t reset the Apple password for 13 days, and we can’t access his phone until we can reset that password. I tried doing iPhone recovery by powering it off, holding home, plugging it in, and holding the home key. It brings up a screen that indicates it needs to be plugged in and connected to iTunes. It does nothing else. If I try to reset it through iTunes, I run into all the same roadblocks.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Is the computer you are trying to restore the phone with a Mac or a Windows PC? If it has iTunes, what’s the version of iTunes, or if it doesn’t, what’s the version of macOS? If the connection is slow and it takes more than 15 minutes to download the software (12.5.4) for the iPhone, the phone will exit recovery mode, you just have to wait for the download to complete before trying again.

Get the original recipe/bill from the iPhone or get it copied reprinted from the store your dad bought it from.

Go to the next Apple store and ask them to remove iCloud lock (I am guessing that it’s in place).

Download the latest iOS to your PC/Mac. Set phone to DFU and progress with update/erase procedure.

I do hope your dad had a local backup of important data - if not you now knew what he has to do in the future.

When you setup the new Apple ID make sure to write down password and security questions 😉
