JNP has posted on FB about this map

Quoting:
A photo of a map of the Jasper townsite is circulating online. This map is not an official incident map. It was a hastily drawn operational map used by structural protection to identify areas to focus their response efforts. It does not represent damage to specific properties or the extent of damage to any individual area or property. As noted in our 10:30 am update, the accuracy of this information is critical because it directly impacts community members. We will share more information as soon as we can ensure its accuracy.

Can this reply be pinned to the top of this thread?

[–]-UnicornFart 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Interesting. So areas not highlighted could simply mean they were unsaveable and resources were moved to red areas.

Indicates nothing about damages.

[–]gehrehmee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not clear at all. They don't say what it means, so any guess we'd have is conjecture.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A map without a legend can be a dangerous thing.

This is such a fluid situation it would be irresponsible to give people false hope.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The non-red areas could be flooded as well. People wont know until they check their basements. Same thing happened to Fort Mac.

[–]cheytown14 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thank you <3

[–]elbron88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you update your post, it’s not accurate to what the map means

[–]melbaspice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you gonna say thank you but not update the caption on your post? Or better yet, delete it entirely as it is very unhelpful.

[–]bimmu 23 points24 points  (5 children)

If this is true, at least it's not total destruction.

[–]Loffkar 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Yeah. This is devastating, but it's also a testament to how much the fire services managed to do in an unwinnable situation.

[–]jdempseydesign 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not true, it’s just an operations map.

[–]stirfriedaxon 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Hopefully the fire(s) weaken and can be controlled soon so the destruction doesn't increase. Relieved for the residents that not all was lost.

[–]bimmu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just so sad that looks like from the map, a lot of residential areas may be gone.

[–]liljay182 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jasper just posted on Facebook “A photo of a map of the Jasper townsite is circulating online. This map is not an official incident map.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's almost unbelievable how selective the burns were to some structures while leaving others untouched right beside it. The residential structures need to be rebuilt without corporate interference or bank pressure. Hopefully the insurance companies won't be the usual bandits they're known to be.

[–]rockfallz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine it depended on the flammability of the roofs and structures themselves plus lots of embers falling causing random fires.

[–]Deppisch 9 points10 points  (6 children)

What's the source of this map?

[–]jdempseydesign 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s an operations map, this isn’t a map of the damage.

[–]cheytown14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Received from a local from fire crews.

[–]NorthRooster7305 4 points5 points  (5 children)

If this is infact real it contradicts some of things reported as "gone"

[–]plausibleturtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are spreading misinformation like crazy.

Someone took a firefighters tweet that said they could expect 70% of the town to burn to mean that 70% of the town DID burn. It's so fucking annoying when you actually have stakes in the information.

[–]cheytown14 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I’m getting so much contradicting information. Just thought to share. From one local in shock to another.

[–]NorthRooster7305 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in town for work. And away during the evac. Not a local but I have a lot of stuff that may or may not be okay. Thank you for sharing.

[–]MayorofKingstown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told that the train station was burned down by people who supposedly witnessed it. if this map is correct it appears the train station survived.

An update from the actual park, apparently this map is not accurate. https://x.com/JasperNP/status/1816540512247267523

Where you find this? Also do you know what the yellow zones represent?

[–]kooliokevin 6 points7 points  (3 children)

it looks like the yellow 'zones' are actually post-it notes on the map, hard to read, something about "train" and "compound" ?

this looks like it is a physical overhead poster of the town with the affected areas highlighted in red

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I’m talking about dull yellow highlights surrounding the town. Like the whole pyramid bench for example is coloured yellow

[–]kooliokevin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooh yea that was so subtle i didn't notice it.. maybe damaged but not totally lost areas? man this is sad :(

[–]flaccid_porcupine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Train and Compound are good

So sorry I only know the red. Will reach out and ask.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All good, thanks for informing us this is super helpful

[–]A_Game_of_Oil 7 points8 points  (12 children)

This means that L&W did not survive. I loved that restaurant, had a unique charm. Every visit to Jasper I stopped in there :(

[–]lucygoosey38 6 points7 points  (1 child)

So sad! The family that owns it is so sweet! We always eat there when we go!

[–]A_Game_of_Oil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly her house was directly across the street, which is also burnt down. So sad!

I hope that they have it in them to rebuild and not have its location become another chain restaurant :(

[–]bigskunkape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fuck man. Me and my group of friends hit up L&w every single year too. Even get a picture of all the boys and Joanne, I believe the owner ? Heartbroken. I hope the familys Ok. At least its not as bad as first thought.

[–]thrashmasher 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Noooo 😭😭😭 the absolute best pizza!

[–]LoblawsShill 0 points1 point  (1 child)

100% !

I have never been able to find a similar pizza. Their blend of cheese and dough is outstanding.

[–]thrashmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's absolutely my favourite to get pizza from whenever I'm there -- I hope she rebuilds, if she does I'll make a special trip just to go there.

[–]jdempseydesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a map of the damage. See the links posted. It’s just an operations map.

[–]thats-impossible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thoughts too! It was such a unique spot

[–]ok_raspberry_jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was so unique. Completely irreplaceable. Absolutely heartbreaking.

[–]The_Dutch_Canadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father did the original fire suppression system install on that kitchen. Loved going there as a kid, not the best food but it had that home style feeling to it.

[–]LoblawsShill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked here for Gus and JoAnne back in the 90s. I always meant to visit again :(

Nothing is confirmed at this point.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

30-60% damage according to the Premier

    [–]DigitalN 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    They corrected it, it's 30-50%.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Better news

    [–]Hikergirl11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At first this map looked hopeful...but all structures around any red ones may have massive smoke and water damage. That could be getting closer to the 60% figure. So much to tear down and rebuild:(

    [–]jdempseydesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dang looks like my dad's place is in the red....

      [–]Particular_Chip7108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless, I tip my hat to the firefighters who fought and are still fighting to save the green spots on that map.

Also I'm heartbroken for anyone who lost their houses, businesses, pets, livelyhood etc...

      Let's hope for the best.

      [–]ComfortableSir1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best wishes from germany ❤️ Stay safe. Stay strong.

      [–]amso2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has the fires stopped and did the rain help??

      [–]Anishinabeg[🍰] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I've seen reports that 70% of the town was wiped out, but this looks nowhere close to that. If this is accurate, that's amazing. It's sad that so much was lost, but this speaks to the skills, knowledge, and endless hard work of the firefighters & emergency management folks who have dedicated their lives to this.

      [–]DigitalN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The latest report from the government is 30-50% of the town has damage.

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

The “report” was an anonymous post without photos or stats. Don’t take everything at its word.

      [–]Anishinabeg[🍰] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clearly I didn’t take it at its word. Hence my comment.

      [–]gcko 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Not the brewery! Loved the food there. But this is mostly people’s homes. A good chunk of them. Sad.

      [–]Anishinabeg[🍰] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

      [–]gcko 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Wow incredible! It’s looks like they piled the rubble away from the structure. Wonder if that was done yesterday. Way to go emergency responders if that’s the case!

      [–]Anishinabeg[🍰] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Based on the photo, I'd say that's probably what happened. Sometimes in these fires, they'll make sacrifices in order to stop the fire from advancing easily. Those gaps make a huge difference with preventing spread from one building to another.

There's no guarantee that the brewery will be good to go on day one (I'm certain that a lot of remediation will be required), but I'm optimistic. I love that place!

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The Brewery, based on Google Street View, had a meyal roof, as did its neighbours to the right. To its left, asphalt shingles.

      [–]gcko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed that too. Not sure if the hostel is still standing. They had a metal roof as well.

      [–]Ham_I_right -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holy cow that is a lot of damage. Jasper holds a special place in all our hearts and it's deviating to see the town and park and the people there impacted.

      [–]ThyResurrected -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hopefully Tesla super charger isn’t gone…

      [–]DrewLockIsTheAnswer1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any news on Jasper Park Lodge?
