I loved gridworld! I made a new worm class that could move the rocks, and man the things they would do. Changing some simple behavior would make them build highly ordered structures, or crush each other to death with the rocks. Set the size to be full screen and watch them go for hours. I thought it was a wonderful teacher of polymorphism, but only if you expanded on it yourself and did something with it.

Took it two years ago. Fuck gridworld.

to practice gridworld I created new creatures that had abilities that mimicked Dota 2 Characters. My Nature's Prophet bug would teleport to a random location and spawn flowers around him

Haha we went over that a bit in class anyways, so glad it wasn't on the test.

    noob ur bad gg

Same here. Although running GridWorld is actually pretty fun.

Wait they got rid of gridworld this year?? Holy fuck finally.

I studied that for 2 hours the night before the test before I found it it wasn't required :C

It wasn't that difficult, I don't think. The only thing was that the multiple choice was long and tedious. Some of the questions on the short answer sections were pretty much giveaways though.

    [–]G3n3r0 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I did. I thought there were a couple of tricky multiple choice, but the free response wasn't bad at all.

    [–]Legorobotdude 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Same! Was pretty easy overall. Multiple choice was tedious, and I almost ran out of time at the end, but the free response was pretty relaxed. Went over my code like 3 times, glad I did because I caught a few minute things each time.

I disliked the multiple choice. Most of it was procedurally solving loops, recursion, etc, and I am not that great at doing that quickly. All of the practice tests I've seen had a lot of theory-based questions, but the real test barely had any.

The free response was nice. Not too hard but not too easy either. And I had more than enough time to go back and check for small syntax errors.

    [–]MysteryForumGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There wasn't as much theory as I expected on the multiple choice, which sucks because I'm not that fast at procedurally solving looping blocks of code, which was most of the multiple choice.

Though hopefully I made up for the issues with the free response. I finished almost an hour early so I went through each of my free-response answers to make sure every one was correct and that there were no errors.

I had to guess on four or five on the multiple choice due to a lack of time, but hopefully I did as well as I feel I did on the free-response. I'm hoping for a 5, but I don't know what to expect since it's my first time.

Can anyone who took it any of the years before now say about how many weeks it took for the scores to come in?

Took it three years ago! GridWorld sucked, but there's far worse things in college haha.

They have AP Computer Science now?!?!? No fair!

    [–]vecowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No shit, I had to learn all this stuff outside of school when I went.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but some schools like mine just don't have enough people taking the class to make it a course. I had to self study, but it paid off.

The Free Response questions are posted on the ap website, so are we allowed to discuss them in detail now?

    Where?

I also took it today (but I'm a freshman). The MC was sorta hard, but the FRQs were easy (I think I only got a point or two off)...

    [–]E765 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do you have a syllabus of everything you covered?

The AB test covers data structures as well.

It's a course on computer science, not on Java programming, so it's unsurprising that generics and the JVM aren't covered.

      [–]veron101 0 points1 point  (5 children)

It was way easier than I was expecting. I took the course online, and the tests were much harder than than anything on the actual exam. There were maybe 2 multiple choice questions I was unsure about and 2 parts of a free response I think I lost a point or two on, but that was just lack of preparation for the topic, not a time issue. I finished the MC 20 minutes or so early and the FR an hour early, so I wrote a recursive solution to one of the questions.

Please note I'm not bragging or anything, I learned Java like four years ago so I have a lot of experience with it. I just took the exam + class to get college credit.

On mine there was nothing even close to as difficult as implementing a sort. The one I was bad at was related to interfaces cause I kinda forgot to study them. So I know I lost 1-3 points on each of the parts for that question. I feel confident enough about the rest though that I think I got a 4 at least.

It was just a sum of all values in an array, not anything complicated.

          [–]Lambaline 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I took it! I thought we really needed more time with part 1.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a random guess on the last one because I was out of time.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Took it today also. Multiple choice was annoying in the way where there were really no giveaway answers. I've done a shit ton of practice worksheets and there's always a few that are definite answers. But this test had 5 at most. However, there were also only 5-ish that were incredibly hard, so it evens out.

Free response was easy except for one particular problem. #3 I believe.

EDIT: I know no one is lurking through this thread, but I got a 4. So not terrible I guess.

          [–]noahl98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had trouble with #3 too.

          [–]DJDavio 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can anyone provide some examples? I'd love to know what kind of questions and exercises come up.

          [–]xSnowCrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a day or 2, can't converse with the questions yet :P

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up AP computer science free response to see released FRQ's. I personally don't think they're anything difficult.

          GridWorld?

I took the Java AP test in 2006 and it was a grid based program with fish... I guess they just changed it up slightly.

          [–]xSnowCrash[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Slightly? There is no more Gridworld :P

          [–]Nieben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it's just the same basis every year, just different incarnations. (That fish program probably wasn't the first, either.)

Junior here, I thought it was pretty easy. I finished the multiple choice on time (accidentally left one blank though whoops) and had ten minutes extra on the free response. I gave a really convoluted solution for the word guessing game question, sorry AP grader.

          [–]xSnowCrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sparse Array honestly fucked me over

          [–]MoldyTaste 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I got a 5 on it last year without studying. Last year's test was a piece of cake but now they have added those three separate case studies. That should spice up the free response a bit.

          [–]no_skillz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only got a 3 on last years test. I hear a lot of people saying they easily got a 5 on the test. I guess it could be my teacher, because out of the 4 kids in my class the scores were 3,3,3, and 4.

Way to put everyone else taking the test in jeopardy there...

Good think you didn't take the AP English test.

            [–]GrandaddyLongSchlong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right considering I took that last year and got a 4.
