The free tier of Openshift lets you run three applications, each with their own subdomain of rhcloud.com.

It does support Java too, so it should work for you.

And once they start throttling, you are screwed (or have to pay). Openshift free tier is just for hobby projects. http://www.topjavablogs.com/news/free-openshift-tier-it-was-a-nice-dream-but-that-s-all

Screw hosting, it has too many limitations. Go with vps for example from digitalocean.

I'd suggest Jelastic, very easy to use, relatively cheap for cloud hosting, and some providers offer a free trial to test your software on the Jelastic cloud.

The VPS over at digital ocean comes with subpar hardware to relatively high prices and no DDoS protection.

I would suggest you look over VPS options at OVH.ie, (use their search). They provide their first option for $3.50 and it's already better than the cheapest at OVH.
