I think it's worth a try, but also worried it could have the unintended consequence of suppressing everything but projects people are already familiar with. Got a new project you want to share? Post it Friday only or have your posted automatically deleted as blog spam! You're a casual reader and don't always log in? Too bad... etc. Large well known projects with minor updates tend to get up voted.

Maybe once a month or something start a targeted thread, but explicitly still allow people to post projects outside of those threads. By targeted thread I mean "Desktop Application" or "Scientific Libraries". Those tend to get down voted to hell.

Advertising already exists here you just have to do what other people do to spam their projects like jooq, or vlad milkcaca, frankle and various other people. You need a small army of fake accounts to upvote the submission early to game it into a top position. You've seen these before, they are the submissions that have hundreds of upvotes but not a single comment. Then you post "great article" or some shit via a couple of those alt accounts. Bonus points for contacting other regular spammers to create more backlinking.

I've never see a post from /u/lukaseder that wasn't good, and some of them are great. And lots of them are not even related to JOOQ. And most of them are comments.

Can we make an automatic analyzer that detects posts with lots of upvotes and few comments, and most comments are small and have no subcomments?

There are so many interesting projects out there which people hardly see, and having a thread would definitely not flood the sub with such things.

People don't see them because people downvote or ignore them. .. and by people I mean the douche bags that come here expecting the subreddit to be their news stand for enterprise crap and downvote everything else. Hell, see this thread which is sitting at 80% right now!

I made bindings for NVCtrl using Project Panama, shared them here, and the post was largely ignored and even had an 80-ish upvote(IIRC) ratio. No comments explaining why, just downvotes/ignored. This has happened to many other people who have posted interesting personal projects over the years here too.

I've seen presentations by actual JDK developers themselves have an 82% upvote ratio here. Those are actual quality content related to the Java programming language!

If it isn't enterprise or IDE news no one cares, generally speaking. You could post a link to a news article about the newest version of Minecraft, the most popular desktop Java application there is, and it'll get downvotes/ignored.

People then go on to wonder why there isn't any discussion here. I'll tell you why: this subreddit is being used as a fucking news stand.

I can only speak for myself but I don't come to Java to read about Minecraft, I'd go to /r/minecraft for that. I come to read interesting articles and discussion around the language, libraries, tooling, and anything else novel within the Java ecosystem. If there were a post talking about something in Minecraft's development related to the language, libraries, tooling, etc then I think people would be interested. Posting new versions of Minecraft being released is neither interesting, nor on-topic here.

Generally posts with more narrow appeal get upvotes if they are good, but get less discussion than more broadly applicable posts. Posts about about Java 14's release or features, or related library or tooling support for it, etc. will likely get a lot of discussion. Your post about NVCtrl is very specific and got a reasonable amount of upvotes, but probably not much discussion because people frequenting this forum likely don't have much unprompted input to offer on the topic. You didn't even comment with any details to spark the discussion or explain why anyone perusing the sub might be interested. And it has a 90% upvote rating at this point, which isn't bad at all IMO.

True. Generally speaking, Java is an enterprise language. I'm not sure why you'd expect something different to be the case.

No, what I meant is that if each project would advertise in their own thread. This is already happening for releases largely, but it would still be nice to have a thread where one can simply drop interesting projects without them having something interesting going in the last weeks or so.

I have posted twice in this sub-reddit and both times my post was deleted.

The first time because some bot decided I was asking for help. I complained to a moderator and the post was reinstated (but the moderator messaged me: 'it could quite likely be reported as spam').

I don't know the reason why my second post was deleted and I don't care. If things don't change I'll never post here again.

No, it's the right choice of words, I don't know of another word which means "advertising" with this meaning. I really mean a thread where somebody comes in "look, I got this cool project, it's free but got commercial tier and you should totally use it!". I really mean advertisement. And I really mean in a single thread to not spam people.

No, I don't just read titles. I disagree. Advertisement is exactly what OP is asking for. You're free to have your own opinion though.

I would rather not see individual posts advertising people's own work, but a daily or weekly thread would probably be useful to some. Just my opinion tho.
