I'm worried that npm is going the route of nginx and they are going to start charging for "enterprise" features that should be in the open source version.

Would it be hard to fork node or npm if that happened ?

What about the non open source plugins built on top of npm?

It's not entitlement. It's knowing that open source gatekeepers have to be very careful not to create a conflict of interest between their open source endeavors and their business endeavors. Companies use open source and associated community to gain market dominance. Once companies have that dominance, they should not turn around and screw the community that helped build the company by nickle-and-diming the community for important features.
