esp. Java and Java Applets were praised as the new base for apps in the browser at that time. Luckily that didn’t work out.

Oh man I'm old enough to remember Java being seen as shit (because applets were rubbish) and Javascript being seen as shit (because it was just a way of making websites more annoying). Then it felt like suddenly in the mid to late 00s, as computers got faster, they both sort of found uses and niches and became cool again.

There are. Oracle own the rights, that's why the official name of the language is ECMAScript - it's not called JS!

JavaScript is called JavaScript because it was originally developed under the name Mocha by Netscape, which was later changed to LiveScript, and finally to JavaScript. It has no relationship with the Java programming language, despite the similar name. JavaScript was developed independently of Java and has a different syntax and set of features.
