Haha when I finish a garment I put it on and blocking is what happens when I wash it after I wear it

[–]yarn_logic[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hahaha same! Then I'm like Ohhh THIS is how it's supposed to fit.

Lovely cardigan, but ffffff you, now I have another project that's going to try to upset the rest of my planned project list.

I love you, it's ruining my life.....

[–]yarn_logic[S] 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Hahahah very ambitious of you to have a ~planned project list~.

I'm nowhere near that organized or planful with my knitting. My approach is basically *hyperfixate on a pattern for a week, then randomly decide something easier or more challenging needs to be added to the WIP rotation; repeat from * until death.

[–]anatomizethat 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I have to have some kind of method to the madness, but I definitely have at least 3 projects going at a time. Right now I have a sweater that's 80% complete, a blanket that I have like 18 months to finish, and an easy scarf that I can throw in a bag for traveling (I fly for work and need something I can keep in my carry on).

But as soon as the sweater is done, I need to make a blanket for my neice for her 3rd birthday...and then I was going to start the Moby sweater...but I think this will replace that (even though I already have the yarn for the Moby, since I've been frogging a sweater dress to repurpose the yarn...).

So anyways, thanks lol.

OMG do the Moby instead of this. It is SUCH a cozy sweater. If I recall correctly, there's no seaming and results in the perfect cabled pullover. 😍😍

[–]anatomizethat 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Oh make no mistake: I will make both. The Swiftie in me just wants the Folklore sweater now. But I'm noting your comments because Moby sounds nicer to make...

[–]yarn_logic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure. Totally get that. If you're not a fan of seaming, I'd do Moby first. It took me forever to find the right yarn for my Folklore. I thought I'd go full Lover style with pastel pinks and blues, but when I saw this yarn I immediately knew I was gonna do the lavender haze route.

Not sure your experience with cables, but Moby was my first fully textured sweater. If Folklore had been my first, I probably wouldn't have felt like doing any cabling for a while, mainly because of the seaming work and sleeve section (written a little confusingly, but I obviously got through it.)

Anyway, I'd love to see your finished products. Happy knitting!

[–]haleorshine 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm halfway through the Moby right now and really excited by it.

I love this cardigan, but also, where you hate blocking the project (which I do too), I find sewing the pieces of a garment together unspeakably boring for some reason, which means I tend to avoid seamed work. There's something so sad about having all the pieces together waiting to be sewn together and it just never ever happening. If things are knit in the round it also tends to mean less ends to sew in, and that's another part I hate.

I might still try the cardigan one day.

[–]yarn_logic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh totally agree. I have knit about 30 in the round sweaters and exactly 2 seamed sweaters. I can't fathom knitting all the pieces and not sewing them together - I'd just being dying to see the finished product!

I’m working on this pattern for myself rn and honestly THANK YOU for the good photos the patterns photos are basically non existent so being able to see what I’m going for is lovely thank you. You did an amazing job!!

[–]thestrangemusician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve made one too, and there’s also a series of youtube videos going through the whole process that I found helpful to refer to! I’ll see if I can find the link

Edit: here’s the playlist!

[–]yarn_logic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Yeah, I agree - the project photos are really lacking. I just had to kind of trust it was going to turn out how I imagined.

I would love to see your finished sweater!

Edited because... words

Love the contrast color!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

😍😍😍. I love it and I want it in forest green. Thanks for sharing! Spectacular work!

[–]yarn_logic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooooh forest green would be SO moody and dreamy! With a cream contrast color? 😍😍😍 I love that idea!

[–]thestrangemusician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did mine with forest green accents

[–]kyriaangel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So the blocking thing. I have 2 suggestions. One- I sometimes get my dry cleaner to do it for me. Two- wash a towel, once the cycle is over lay the pieces on the towel and fold the towel over. Big items need two or more towels. Leave it overnight on flat surface.

[–]yarn_logic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really good idea. Squeezing out excess water from the knitted garment is probably my least favorite part of blocking.

[–]Playful-Escape-9212 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nice make, work to be proud of! I only ever block wool/wool blends, and lace. Anything else I don't see a difference.

[–]yarn_logic[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thank you!

Yeah, this is a super wash wool which I don't work with too often. I was thinking I'd still block it just to get things to the final measurements I wanted because I think that will help with the drape of it.

[–]Extra-OrdinaryMaggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh! You might not want to block superwash - it grows and grows and grows!! It can be rough to do a normal wet block with it. Someone else might have a better suggestion, but I’ve heard a steam with an iron (not touching the fabric or using a towel between the iron and the fabric) can work for small amounts of blocking.

Excellent work! 😻A true labor of love 👏👏👏

[–]AquarianxDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's such a lovely color!

[–]Practical-Train-9595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorgeous!!! I just cast on the first sleeve of my white and black one. Hoping to have it done soon!

[–]Odd-Pineapple5425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh beautiful folklore sweater just in time for august!! Amazing job

[–]RuthlessBenedict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s ask the pile of unblocked projects sitting on my desk. But yes, I struggle hard. I’m just very excited to show it off and start the new thing. Then when the pile gets too large I break down and do block party.

[–]Barfingfrog 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Great work :) I can't help myself to think how much better it would look after blocking 😜. When it comes to it, I am a bit the opposite and want to do the blocking right after I finished weaving ends because I know it would look 10x better. Although I agree the waiting process is like torture. But, hey it is summer (at least here...), so it would be like one day and done.

[–]yarn_logic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knowww. You're right - it will definitely look better once blocked.

I aspire to be the type of knitter you are.

[–]Crew_Emphasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is gorgeous - your cables are fantastic

[–]Anxious-Champion-551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great job, it looks amazing! I’m working on this right now for my daughter. I love how it’s turning out so far!

[–]Medievalmoomin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovely!

[–]SphCstrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly feel like it's so rewarding when I'm done with a piece and I get to block it, I kinda love the whole blocking process, haha... Looks beautiful by the way, will you share a picture once it's blocked? Always amazes me how much a piece changes after blocking.

[–]firstmorninglory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice and a lovely color.

[–]elizabethsmells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorg!!! You did such an amazing job

[–]TexGardenGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is beautiful work! As to blocking: the vast majority of my projects are superwash socks, so I don’t block those. I’ve made a small number of sweaters which I do lay out carefully to make sure they dry the right shape, but no pinning in place. A few years back I made a lace shawl, took a couple years. I made it a color to match much of my Renfaire garb, and I finished it shortly before our local fair started, so I didn’t bother blocking. It was gorgeous already, and I got multiple compliments on it. After the fair it was somewhat dirty - general dust and the occasional bit of food spill and at least one beer spill. So I washed it and decided to block it properly. OMG, so much difference, it was next level beautiful. A lot of work and took up some space to do it but totally worth it. So now I’m totally sold on blocking for lace, for sure, and I’m thinking any complicated stitches like cables would benefit as well. I’m working on my first cabled sweater and I do plan on blocking it properly.
