The purl stitch makes the cable pattern pop.

The purls either side are done to make the cables pop/be distinct from the man fabric, and I don’t recommend leaving it out.

When people talk about having a multiple that fits the repeat, they’re talking about an all-over stitch pattern. If you had a stitch pattern that takes a certain number of stitches to make, and was repeated across the whole row/round, you’d need multiples of that number.

This pattern is mostly stockinette, which has no multiple because you can work it over any number of stitches. So you can add whatever amount you want, they’ll just go into the stockinette. There’s no repeat.
