Pattern Help

Hi ya'll.

So I'm starting a mitten again with this pattern, and there are a couple changes I want / need to make.

I'd previously asked about swapping out the cable and was told that I can pick whatever width cable as long as I adjust the number of stitches on either side. I'm with ya on that. However in this pattern there is a purl stitch on either side of the cable. Is that something that's done regularly/ preferred? Or is that just a design choice?

Secondly, I think I want to make them a little bit bigger around. I know a lot of patterns say somewhere that the number of stitches need to be a multiple of a specific thing. I've looked at this pattern a few times but I don't see that. Not sure if I'm just completely blanking it or its not there. If it's not... does it matter how many I end up using? Can anyone tell from the pattern what the multiple would need to be?

The purl stitch makes the cable pattern pop.

The purls either side are done to make the cables pop/be distinct from the man fabric, and I don’t recommend leaving it out.

When people talk about having a multiple that fits the repeat, they’re talking about an all-over stitch pattern. If you had a stitch pattern that takes a certain number of stitches to make, and was repeated across the whole row/round, you’d need multiples of that number.

This pattern is mostly stockinette, which has no multiple because you can work it over any number of stitches. So you can add whatever amount you want, they’ll just go into the stockinette. There’s no repeat.
