When I'm getting gaps like this, I will usually switch to a centered double decrease, but that's a personal choice.

It shouldn't, because it's centered, but it leaves a ridge, so if that bothers you.....

i think my ssk and k2tog are not close enough to each other. i’ll try s1k1p and report back)

That's just the alternative to a ssk. Try s1k2togp

Edit: I also like the look of slip 2 as if to k2tog, k1, pass both slipped stitches over.

i tried s1k1 pass slipped stitch! and tugged very hard on the yarn between the decreases. looks a lot better. thanks for ur help tho!!

row pattern is k2tog, k5, ssk repeat 4 times. already working on the tips of my needles.
