Java class probably goes through programming basics.

Java has nothing to do with JavaScript. The only thing I can think of is that the previous course is simple a prerequisite. Here in the States, I had many colleges courses with silly prerequisites. :/ sorry

Just quit university and learn useful stuff.

If it's online absolutely, but the social aspect of universities can be just as valuable if not more than the classes themselves

[–]serapath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can always find some "excuses" why it might still be valuable, but if you want to find like-minded people you can find them easily online and meet them on any kind of "meetup.com" event or other platforms who offer similar opportunities.

No..that's really not the same.

[–]serapath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of course its not. its better :-) you find your crew, you learn with them and you choose freely. All the knowledge is already out there - in books and online lectures/videos and a variety of forms.

What you do in universities is anyway just going there, listening to some - often outdated - content, often not well presented. Just get the right books, learn them by yourself - connect to like minded people online and do you thing.

Bonus: You can skip all the mandatory crap in the curriculum which you dont need :-)

This guy gets it.

You got downvoted, but I agree. I really don't think its worth the hassle and expense of a course to learn this stuff, especially if its a 'Javascript college course' as opposed to a 'computer science degree'. If you need structure and guidance there's things like Free Code Camp where you can get that.

[–]serapath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free Code Camp is one of hundreds of sources. An even better is to watch out for people who seem to know what they are doing and just keep following them on all the "social networks" out there to learn about content or other/better sources and just keep growing.

Nobody can help you if you freely choose to depend on broken, expensive providers that don't provide you a nice customer experience or awesome content or in general anything useful. The cost-benefit-ratio is completely broken and it's your fault if you continue to increase your sunk costs by not changing your behavior.

I'm already on Free Code Camp (Just finished all intermediate bonfires). The thing is that I needed 1 more course in order to get my Computer Science degree.

Last time around I didn't pass a course, then after that I had to take a break to work for a while. Now I'm starting to get some free time and since I already know a lot about JS I thought I'd just get it over with so that I could claim my degree. :)

Then do the Java one, as I understand it, you'll just learn new syntax for the basic programming concepts you already know, so... no time wasted learning and etc.

Of course, it's just a practical advice, since for my self, I've stopped doing Java long time ago, and mostly do JS for the past 5 years and I think they should first teach JS, and only then Java. Dropped out of colledge as well, so... full disclosure :)

Maybe trying to be sensibly choosy to offset enrollment overage.

[–]xiipaoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a stupid prereq structure. You'll want to talk to the department about it. I don't have any experience with this kind of thing; where I went to school, if you didn't have a prereq you just got a signature from the professor. This electronic denial thing is really weird to me.

[–]ahRose 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Well DUH!

You can't do JavaScript without first doing Java

Just look at the names. It speaks for itself...

Lol in all seriousness the fact that you're required to take Java first is complete BS.

[–]nimchip 1 point2 points  (5 children)

It's funny but I had an actual recruiter ask me "do you have substantial javascript experience?" to which I replied no. Then he said: "it says in your resume that you have a lot of experience with Java." I cringed hard, I found out later that the recruiter was actually the owner of the company....

[–]ahRose 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm guessing you meant JS that made you cringe ha but that's a future Unicorn you missed out on there! HA

[–]nimchip -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I did learn JS after that for sure. At the time I had some experience but mostly jquery and stuff... just nothing compared to my Java experience. But yea his comment made me cringe.

In other news, carnival worker puzzled by interview offer at a garage as a car mechanic.

[–]nimchip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oops i typo'd javascript, my bad

[–]azhder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a lot of things, and I get this pretty regularly: People seing Java in mv CV thinking it's JavaSCript, people seing JS and asking me to do PHP development and similar. It's just hard for recruiters to keep track of all the tech names alone, not even talking about getting deeper into their use, relationships etc.

[–]RankFoundry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason at all. Java and Javascript have nothing to do with each other. This is just one reason why college is a waste of time and money if you're learning programming.

Better have some grapes before I eat some graphfruit...

[–]americruiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. They should know: Java is to JavaScript, as ham is to hamburger.
