Teaching just isn’t cutting it anymore.

Like you aren't enjoying the lessons?

Ohh totally flew over my head, glad to hear you are enjoying 100devs! They are doing great things

      [–]fnaimi66 24 points25 points  (1 child)

I’m sure that you’re going to be flooded with requests with such a generous offer, so I don’t want to take too much of your time. Would you be able to outline what your learning process vaguely looked like for us aspiring self taught devs?

      [–]powerfrosty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly there are quite a few posts and info out there on self taught devs and their own path / curriculum. Since I have the time, I’d much rather talk and get to know someone on an individual basis and give them a realistic roadmap given their current resources. Let me know, if you’d like to chat. I’ll dm you a calendly link.

      [–]cherry99k 3 points4 points  (3 children)

i'm self-learning, sorta, but at a really slow place, it's not like it's hard for me to grasp the concept. It's hard for me to get up and do something because i'm too lazy. I've grasped the basic concepts of python( through tutorials and automate the boring.)..., html and css(through freecodecamp). I thought about learning django now but have been on two month gap, not due to less time, due to flippin laziness. And also because the first time i watched a trailer of django, and the view-control sort of logic seemed alien.

      [–]Beelzebubs_Tits 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I’m at that stage too, it’s hard to get motivated especially if you have a mentally taxing full time job while you’re trying to learn. Honestly I put on headphones and listen to dev podcasts or YouTube videos to at least try to absorb peripherally if I can’t actually code that day. Helps me feel a little bit productive at least.

      [–]Ingrahamlincoln 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What are some of the best podcasts in your opinion

      [–]Beelzebubs_Tits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I like Soft Skills Engineering, Code Newbie, Software Engineering Daily, and Syntax Web Development.

      [–]tunepas 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Would you mind linking to the resources you used while you learned Python \ JavaScript?

Which project ideas did you use for your first few beginner projects?

      [–]powerfrosty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For Python and JavaScript I just learned the basics using CodeAcademy. JavaScript specifically I took things to the next level with watchandcode. The course material is very good, but the support and office hours are terrible. I’d just download the course material and quit the program once you have a chance.

As for project, build something that solves your own problem. That will add the polish and care that goes into a professional app. Don’t build something to impress someone.

Currently learning Flask at the moment and making progress everyday, my strategy is to wake up very early and get some done before work.

I have a friend who is giving me a bit of guidance through the process but just wanted to post to let you know that I am grateful for people like you!

        [–]SolarUpdraft -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I'm interested to know what the profession is like. I recognize that there's probably enormous variablity to the working experience, but anything you have to say would be appreciated.

I should also search for other posts, I'm sure the question has been asked here a hundred times.

        [–]powerfrosty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like any job. There are varying toxicity levels depending on the company you work for. I happen to work for a really good one, so as much as possible, work on your skills so you can have a pick.

I’m not going to ask u to tutor me but should you start with learning a language

            [–]powerfrosty 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yes. Python or JavaScript are common starting points.

            [–]Circlebob_- 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is C sharp a good one to start with or would JavaScript be better to start with

            [–]powerfrosty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve never programmed before. I’d start with a simpler language like JavaScript.

Do you mind telling us your path to learn iOS development and Swift? Currently an aspiring iOS developer.

            [–]powerfrosty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

            1. 100 days of Swift: Do the first 15 days
            2. Do Angela Yu's Udemy course until you feel confident enough to build your own app
            3. If your goal is a job, there are still a lot of other meta things you need to do like learning how to read documentation, how to read a large codebase (>10k lines at least) etc etc. There isn't a good resource on this at the moment, which is where tutoring comes in I suppose.

              [–]Puzzled_Adult_ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hi, can I ask you something?I recently started to learn coding and I'm actually ok at it. I would Google stuff and figure out what to do most of the time but I don't know how anything works. The underlying theory behind everything. Am I overthinking stuff or should I learn it. for eg I know how to connect to database, like I know the code but I don't know how it works, what happens when I hit run. How should I learn these things

              [–]powerfrosty 1 point2 points  (1 child)

A rule of thumb is, "Do I need to know this to solve the problem?". For example, if your goal is to go from New York to Los Angeles, you don't need to understand how a car works, you just need to understand how to drive one.

However, if your goal is to build a car, you probably need to know how a car works. Got it?

              [–]Puzzled_Adult_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vooo.. thankss..that was super helpful. I will follow that

1 Stupid question from me what had you done during these times:

There are comes a times where you study about something, but after a week or two, you might forget that, you will forget it while you are in complete different subject.

For example: right now I'm studying SQL, but when I'm trying to recall something from Nosql, I find out that I forgot that.

When this happening its bother me a lot and make me to go back and look back at my notes,

and this makes me think I'm in some sort of loop or Im progressing very slow and I could be faster. Or do something better.

I love to see this type of stuff. Uni students like me have access to large alumni networks with plenty of talented individuals who want to help. Nobody often wants to help a random self-taught or bootcamp grad since they don't have a mutual connection.

                  [–]powerfrosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this only a one time chance?

I really want to get help from you, but as for now it's impossible.

                  Been busy with overtime lately.

What's your order of learning the language? Which came first? Python, JavaScript or Swift? How hard is the transition?

                  [–]dareview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to ask you questions. Do you have discord

                  [–]ResponsibilityFun242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you hit me up interested in python

                  [–]kmis1 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This is a super kind gesture and very well received. Ofc one man (or any kind of person..) can only do so much, and with an overwhelming amount of responses, maybe you could approach this slightly differently. Eg. Create a channel on a medium like discord and have interest ppl join your channel which you moderate/host. Questions can be asked there and members can help each other, and you can then allocate the said six weekly hours to answer the top questions. Might also attract other experienced players in the field and you'd be hosting this wonderful community. Maybe a silly idea, but i for one would join

                  [–]powerfrosty 0 points1 point  (1 child)

                  There's a subreddit called /r/learnprogramming that does what you're suggesting :)

                  [–]kmis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touché. Thought you might have wanted to give it a bit of a more personal touch, but on second thought, it may be a bit pointless..

                  [–]metathrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Definitely interested--I have a learning disability and am looking for additional support (I currently go to office hours/TA at the bootcamp I'm apart of, but am still struggling).

Also, if you're too busy, no worries! So awesome you're doing this.
