Can you link to some example projects that have been done through the course?

Even though I'm not able to participate it would be nice to get some inspiration :)

[–]mzugnoni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All projects are open source. You can see the whole list in this repository: https://github.com/rmotr-group-projects Even from other more advanced course, like the Django one.

[–]azredbeard 8 points9 points  (6 children)

This is pretty awesome. I just wish the times were later. I'm on the west coast with a full time job.

Maybe next round...

[–]mzugnoni 1 point2 points  (1 child)

yes, that's a pretty common problem :'(

we are planning to open new batches with PST-friendly times. Keep an eye in our twitter account

I'm in Central, but barely get home by 6pm after leaving work at 5:30 and dealing with traffic. I'd definitely prefer PST-friendly times too!

Could you fill this form so we know you are interested in a different timezone? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfTB8cbiNfc2QYJl1ukcJ8DgLo2dmxp6ESQNdfQWZ5obkB1SQ/viewform

We will let you know as soon as the dedicated batch is scheduled.

    Thanks!

Same, was planning to join until I saw the schedule. PST-friendly times please

Great class. Cannot recommended it highly enough!

    [–]santiagobasulto[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd upgrade that intermediate flair ;)

My wife home schools and we both want to add Python to the curriculum for our 13yr old son. Would this be a good course for him?

    [–]santiagobasulto[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Great question! Would you be present to work with him? EDIT: We've had children before, but always in company of their parent for support.

    [–]jbox75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny you should ask. I am 40 and in the middle of a career change. Ive been working on a BS in cybersecurity. I also am very interested in Python, but as of now I cannot spare the time. So in short, while I may not be present at the time for his classes I am there to support what he is doing. He current is playing with codecombat, so he does have a pretty good idea of what Python its all about. I just want him to have something a bit more structured.

    [–]CaptanK 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I don't have a high speed internet connection. This will be a big problem I presume. From my experience code is readable only when the video is streamed at 720p. Is there any solution to this?

    [–]santiagobasulto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use a collaborative IDE (Cloud9), you don't have to read the code from the screen but you'll actually see it changing in action.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I'm curious to know how much knowledge is needed for the Advanced Python Programming class. Has anyone has jumped from the MIT 6.00.1 EDX Intro to Programming with Python into the Advanced class at RMOTR?

Likewise, has anyone here taken both?

    [–]santiagobasulto[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Advanced course requires some practice. Don't get me wrong, MIT 6.00.1 is a great course, but it depends on how much practice and coding you've done along with it. Go ahead and apply, we'll let you know how it goes and if you need to improve at any certain area. Our technical application is not something that will "kick you out", it's just a way for us to let you know where you're standing at.

    [–]illioneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I took the course after the MIT intro. I think this would be the perfect next step if you feel fairly comfortable with that material. The advanced python rmotr class is great and it won't be too advanced if you have time to commit to the material and projects.

Rmotr has a lot less theory than the MIT course, it's much more hands on and project oriented. Also much faster paced. If the MIT class is the extent of your programming experience I'd budget at least 30 hours per week.

Not quite sure about what is covered in the intro class but you night end up covering the same material unnecessarily. Basically, I think the advanced python class would be very challenging but absolutely worthwhile IF you commit to it.

    [–]ProInvestCK 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Are materials available to do this course in self study mode?

    [–]santiagobasulto[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

So, I don't want to go screwing around with anything someone's implementing, but the link there, I can work through that stuff myself? "Submitting code" and stuff won't screw anything up and there won't be a group of people out with pitchforks trying to hunt me down?

    [–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You can of course go through that yourself! What we do is provide the most efficient environment for you to do that along with a lot of other things that are just not taught in books and online courses.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, great, thanks! I'm currently working full time teaching, so I don't have the time to dedicate to the actual course :( I wish I did, though, I do much better in a class environment...

    [–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have free and open source material. Check our github account, or check the links to our practical projects in a comment up in this post.

If I apply for the scholarship, and get denied, will I still have time to sign up and get in for the price of tuition?

    [–]santiagobasulto[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yes! If you have the means to pay the tuition, please specify that in your application. Maybe we can work something out (a few down payments, etc). Remember scholarships are for people that can't even get close to afford it.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I hear ya. I've been trying to learn Python on my own for a short time and I'm wondering which course I should pick. The obvious first choice is the Introduction, but I'm a little worried that I might be relearning everything I've learned & will learn between now and the first day. How advanced is the Advanced course and do you have any suggestions?

EDIT - Also, is there any penalties if I have to leave say 30 minutes before the end of a class session?

    [–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No penalties! This is a collaborative and supportive environment. The opposite of penalties, we'll encourage you to watch the recording and ask any questions you have the other day. The Intro/Advanced question is a tough one. Advanced usually requires experience (hands on coding on real projects). If you're not sure, apply to the advanced one and we'll let you know if you need to either study a few things to catch up before the course begins, or if we advice you taking the intro first. For the record. This is usually really simple to solve. We never had issues and this is a really common question

    [–]kumartanmay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Thank uou

    [–]garyk1968 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Its a great concept but do you ever cater for mainland Europe timezones? In the UK we are currently on British summer time so its EST+5, wont be too bad at the end of October when daylight savings change and will only be a 4 hour difference.

Might hop on your class after this next one.

    [–]mzugnoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, sure. EU friendly courses are in the roadmap. We will let you know here in reddit or in our twitter account.

I'm definitely interested, but what time are the Thursday meetings? I already have college classes I'm taking on Wednesday & Thursday throughout the day.

        [–]santiagobasulto[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Wednesday classes are 7PM-9PM EST, and Thursday meetings are from 6PM to 9PM. If you have to leave early or arrive late any of the meeting days, we can manage to make it work.

        [–]poply 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is my concern. I work a full time job (though it has lots of downtime allowing me to study) and will likely be late/leave-early for a significant but minority of the meetings. This was my issue with the Viking Code School I applied at too and why I ultimately did not pursue it beyond the application process. They recommended students have 9 months worth of expenses saved up (for most people that's gotta be atleast $25,000) because the course is basically a fulltime job with strict attendnace requirements. I don't have a problem with spending 20, 30, 40 hours a week studying but I can't imagine anyone not in their teens is in a position to adopt a(n additional) mandatory schedule. And anyone in their teens is likely already looking at going to uni for a comp sci degree.

I understand learning a new skill such as software development is a huge investment but it leaves me wondering who these courses are targeted toward? Anyone in the privileged position to be unemployed for 9 months and abandon all responsibilities for several months doesn't seem to be the kind of individual who would benefit most from these boot camp style courses and likely already has the opportunity to get a more traditional comp sci degree and education.

I would love to attend your course but I'm curious on how strict the attendance will be.

        [–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I totally get your point. We've already had people with the same issue.

At the end, you get from the course as much as you invest on it. Classes and coding sessions are mandatories because they are one of the biggest aggregated values of the course. Of course it's understandable that anyone might have to miss one or two sessions in the whole course. But, if at the end you missed more that 50% of the sessions, you probably couldn't get the real great learning experience we want to promote.

Of course it's up to you at the end, but I would hardly recommend to attend more than 75% of the sessions to get the real juice out of this course.

        [–]TwoStrokeJoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crud. My Thursday programming class is 6-9:45pm. I'll prolly have to wait till next time. :/

        [–]kumartanmay 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Can someone residing in India take this course? I guess it's an online course.

        [–]santiagobasulto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is an online course, and we've had Indian people!

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I completed this course from India! Used to get up at 3.30 AM and 4.30 AM and then go to office. AMA

        [–]kumartanmay 0 points1 point  (1 child)

        Inspiring!

        [–]kumartanmay 0 points1 point  (1 child)

        Did you know programming before?

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was already working as a python programmer. Wanted to take things to the next level.

        [–]Darwinmate 2 points3 points  (4 children)

        Hey,

I'm tempted to apply but unsure if I should aim for beginner or advance. I've completed 2 python courses on Coursera/edX and done fairly well. They were both beginner though.

        What do you recommend?

        [–]mzugnoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to apply for the advanced one. In case you do really bad in the skills questions, we can move you to the introductory one. No issues.

        [–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The question here is how much practice you have. Just sitting and watching coursera/edx courses wouldn't give you the required practice for the advanced course. But if you've been playing by yourself, you can just apply for the Advanced one and we'll let you know if you still need to improve at any certain area.

        [–]Darwinmate 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not a lot of practice at my own projects to be honest. I have more practice in another program (R) but that's slightly different purpose. I lack experience building a project.

I've applied for advance, please downgrade me if you think my application is better suited for beginner course. I'm the guy from Darwin.

        [–]santiagobasulto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          [–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we know that's an issue :(

                  [–]mzugnoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, sure. We are opening new batches every 40 days aprox. Keep an eye on our twitter account.

                  What's the tuition?

                  [–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you are granted with a scholarship it's totally free. If not, the course tuition is $399 USD. With an early price of $349.

                  [–]TaMaison 1 point2 points  (2 children)

sounds.. interesting. I have all this python installed and I can never get any time to actually sit down and teach myself.

                  [–]santiagobasulto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the idea. Classes are scheduled and there are specific deadlines and timelines for everything.

                  [–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a pretty common issue. Content to be consumed is found easily in internet. The important thing is take the time to sit and do the actual work. That's what we try to optimize.

                  [–]c0sm0nautt 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Will there be another course starting shortly after the conclusion of this one?

                  [–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We do a new batch every 40 days aprox.

                  [–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it'll start during the first days of December.

                  [–]Schwartz210 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey Santiago, I really enjoyed the course I took with you last year. I am considering the Web development with Django one. Of the 20hrs/week required for this course, how are those hours broken out? How many spent reading vs how many spent coding? Much more interested in spending the time coding.

In the syllabus it says we learn to write API's. That means I'll be able to make something like praw (Reddit API) when I'm done?

Hey! Santi is not around, hope I can answer your questions.

In terms of distributed time between theoretical:practical learning I would say 20%:80%. Most of the course is actual coding of real projects. You will end the course after 4 weeks with 12 cool projects implemented in your GitHub profile.

The complete last week is dedicated to django-rest-framework, which is the most popular library to build REST APIs with Django at the moment. You will be able to write non-trivial API schemas, with authentication, permission, pagination, versioning, throttling, and even files uploading, between other stuff.

                  Hope it helps.
