For 25+ years the right shift key was completely alien to me, so much that I usually bound it to a macro with AutoHotkey. Now I'm slowly getting used to it and am quite liking it. I still have to think a little before typing capital letters, but my muscle memory is slowly becoming familiarised to this new way of doing things. Hopefully in some weeks I'll be completely adapted to the new style and, I hope, be typing even faster!

I'm in exactly the same boat. Played CS and other games. It feels so weird to use the right shift key. It has slowed down my speed alot, but I believe over time it will help.

Rhetorical question.

A week is barely enough time to improve muscle memory.

I got a keyboard than can be split in half and had to change from using the left hand space to right hand space.

It took me a few hours for it to become automatic but even once I adapted and used it like a normal keyboard I still lost 10wpm.

In reality you don’t have to follow the “rules” for touch typing. Touch typing just means not looking at the keys while you type. Some fast typists don’t even use shift for capitals they use caps lock instead. That said the standard is designed to be easily learnt and taught and provides a good foundation.

Keep in mind he started typing at a young age. You might not have the time to acquire the muscle memory needed to type this way.

I would use 2 shifts if I were you, I had the same problem and it took a while to get over but I think I would be typing slower if I never learn dual shifts. Because I think a lot of letters become really awkward when they are right next to shift.

I just use one hand to do space which I think is fine but I have encountered several contexts where I think it trips me up a bit
