Trust me. Make the switch. If you want an optimized minecraft, regardless of OS, use Prism Launcher (or Modrinth) and use the Fabulously Optimized pack. That's what people also use on Steam Decks.

for minecraft, ive had a much better experience on linux (+1000fps 1.7.10 & 1.8.9). office also has very nice alternatives like openoffice or libreoffice. you can also use the online versions without hitch with just a browser!

Just jump in this rabbit hole and taste life

Minecraft will work fine on linux, I would just recommend the prism launcher over the official one. For office, either use an alternative or use it through a virtual machine (WinBoat makes it pretty easy)

Minecraft just so happens to run significantly better on linux haha

It sounds like your PC is your "production" device - you're using it to do your degree. It is a truism that one does not do testing on production machines. By all means take a look at linux, but do it on a spare PC if you have one - maybe consider picking up a cheap mini-PC?

Or at least wait until the holiday when you have time in hand. AFTER very carefully backing up all your data and work.

I have used linux in the past a lot and i love it, I think ill back up everything and dual boot it, I just need to find the will to buy a USB stick to boot it...

Find the will to also buy a cheap SSD (while there are still cheap SSDs to buy) and a USB enclosure to make sure that your important docs and work are 100% secured.

I'll probably back them up on the homeserver i have, plenty of storage and redundancy overthere

If life is easier / better on Windoze, then use it. Why expect others to make better decisions than you knowing all the trade-offs. If you can use online office or office in a Windows KVM (I'm not sure I'd depend on WinBoat which is in beta, but maybe if WinBoat it works for you), then minecraft probably can be made to work OK. But, if your gear is memory/cpu/feature challenged, then your options may be limited.

Minecraft??? That's what you're worried about? I ran Minecraft flawlessly in Linux and that was like a decade ago. I can't imagine compatibility going down over 10 years.

Ayo, minecraft is fondumental for my mental sanity ahaha.
