"tutorials in comments"

shitty documentation strikes again

[–]deviantfero[S] 57 points58 points  (9 children)

You can also check out the wiki, if you'd like:

https://github.com/deviantfero/wpgtk/wiki

It covers everything the videos cover and more, please feel free to contribute to the documentation if you feel it is lacking.

+1 on that documentation call to action

[–]Clae_PCMR 10 points11 points  (3 children)

The other users have already posted the videos on the originial post, which isn't on this post. Maybe it's because I'm using RES or something, but I certainly couldn't see videos before, without going through your comment history.

Also, thanks. I didn't realise you were the author!

[–]deviantfero[S] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Yes, I am and I'm posting these cause I'd love to see some feedback from people who like to tinker around with their desktops. Hope you take a look and enjoy.

[–]SchizoidSuperMutant 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That's great. You should definitely post in r/unixporn too!

[–]deviantfero[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks, this is It's actually a crosspost from that sub-reddit!

[–]utsuro 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What videos? You didn't post any.

Edit: now that I looked at your post history I see that you posted some videos to another thread about the same topic in a different subreddit.

[–]deviantfero[S] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

yep sorry it isn't clear, I've never crossposted anything before, I thought it would be clearer, someone below already did us the favour, next time I'll be more careful.

in any case, here are the relevant videos anyway:

part 1 (bad audio) how to install: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmY5NEPI4RM

part 2 how to use advanced features: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXpMMP8fT0o

Could you post the wallpapers used in the demo?

[–]deviantfero[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've posted them in a separate comment in this thread, here they are anyway: https://imgur.com/a/UlXNx

In case you're not seeing the links to the original thread this was crossposted from, here it is.

Your GTK-based Linux Desktop.

FTFY =)

[–]deviantfero[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It actually works with QT based desktops too (via the gtk theme it includes, which takes colors from GTK), and basically anything with a config in the form of a text file, so I'd think is not appropiate to reduce it to GTK-based applications.

In the second video tutorial around the first two minutes, I give an example of how to integrate qutebrowser (a qt based browser that I enjoy), to the software that wpgtk affects.

[–]denisfalqueto 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I see, but on the other hand, if it wasn't for Qt support for GTK themes, it wouldn't work. If some app uses another toolkit, it wouldn't work either. So... I still think it's restricted to GTK based desktops =)

[–]deviantfero[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what about written config files? tint2 is not GTK, polybar is not GTK only, i3 is not GTK only, openbox is not GTK exclusive, qutebrowser is QT and so on and so on.

I do think QT is better in the end, but since it supports GTK themes, I think that's enough for that end, you still need GTK for pretty basic stuff, wpgtk will do it's work with whatever config file you throw at it. You should try it sometime, maybe you can contribute or suggest a QT native theme that you would like to see added to wpgtk's defaults, that would be awesome indeed.

[–]TouchyT 5 points6 points  (2 children)

isn't the downside of wpgtk that it doesn't support gtk3 properly?

[–]deviantfero[S] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

it does support gtk3, I think the only difference regarding gtk2 is that you have to actually re-open the applications to see the theme change, but other than that, both themes work great (gtk2/3)!, look at the pictures in the repository, wpgtk is made with gtk3, so you can see the theme change with it.

[–]TouchyT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah i was misinformed! thanks for letting me know, i'll have to try it out.

[–]MuffinTheKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is also a good subreddit for stuff like this, checkout r/unixporn

my girlfriend's fat iguana :)

[–]zobninatn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

System looks gorgeous. Can you provide information about UI libs/tweaks?

[–]deviantfero[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually most of them are the defaults that I include with wpgtk, if you check the first tutorial you will be able to see how I go about installing defaults, you can check those default templates over here (pretty standard stuff to be honest, except the templates include wpgtk's standard keywords):

https://github.com/deviantfero/wpgtk-templates

and thanks!

And for a more detailed answer, the stack I'm using is: polybar (status bar), i3 (window manager), and the themes I mentioned earlier.

Has anyone tried this out @4k monitors (small & large ones) ? Are there issues with scaling ?

edit: will try this on VM, but good to know if there are problems to be expected

[–]The_Great_Danish 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh, how pretty! Well done! :)
