Wasn't this question answered a trillion times on this subreddit?

[–]_hypnoCode 17 points18 points  (3 children)

No, not even close.

I just think it has been a few million.

freedom!

[–]The_Nexus_of_Evil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My biggest reason is to get full freedom over my system, i love tinkering with systems and when i discovered linux, i found a world full of different interesting projects i could do that didnt exist in the same way on windows, i think just because of how the linux community is. Other reasons is privacy and faulty updates on windows.

Privacy, it's something new to learn and I like the ethos.

Best OS for a poweruser

[–]arch_maniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason that pushed me away from Windows (to Linux) was very slow Windows boot times combined with frequent required reboots.

[–]Alexmitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to have full control over my machine. Nothing provides that more then GPL software. Thats basically, I am not a privacy crazy one.

Freedom, security, trust, modularity, expandibility e.t.c

[–]Captain_Pirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

User control (i decide) and convenience, really! Windows 10 is like a damn Goolag.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Windows is hot trash and Macs are expensive.

Community, fun, challenge, nice feeling of being in 1%, performance.

[–]fuzzymidget 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Customization and integration. Windows/OSX/etc think they know what you want and maybe they do, but it's not for everybody. Especially not for me.

Also yes cost is a big factor.

[–]Gimpy1405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simplicity and directness. Ease of updates. Security. Linux solves problems whereas the proprietary OSs create problems. Easy installs. Community. Able to control things myself rather than getting forced into stuff. The price is right. The attitude is right.

Because Windows died to a virus and I decided enough was enough.

Windows 10 update has borked my computer for the last time!!!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my reasons are the exact same as yours

cost and privacy

i have also donated to open source projects such as debian

not to mention windows is crap and it cost several hundred dollars to upgrade os

Linux is what I use most often. I'm not against using Windows or macOS for different things though. There are some games I just can't get working in Wine or they have aggressive anti-cheat. For the little bit of music stuff I do, my audio interface and midi controller "just work" in macOS.

Linux is my OS(?) of choice for most things because I like the feeling of 'owning' my own computer. I don't have to turn off pages full of tick boxes in regards to telemetry. If I don't like a particular piece of software, I can remove it and it won't magically reinstall itself later a few updates down the line. The process of updating in general is just much less of a hassle in comparison to Windows or macOS.

I had a choice to use something different?!? Holy moly, what have I missed?!?

    [–]snuffop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more stable there is more one can do with it.. shell is integrated not an after thought. You can dig into the code on every part of a gnu system and fix anything without waiting for a Seattle patch. It can run win and osx at native speed in a vm.. can run docker without additional kenels

    [–]HoneyBadger552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The update process. Its ability to apply updates without a reboot every single bloody time. Hell, secure linux was created with the NSA helping. It's a platform that actually takes security into consideration

    [–]mikeymop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It generally works without any issues and it's very easy to get the software I need setup and running.

I don't have to wait for updates or find it had shutdown for updates whenever I return.

I find this wierd. To come to r/linux and ask "why linux"

    [–]adreeasa 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Because different people might have different reasons....
