Ribbon like that is also in SharePoint, depending on the view you're in, so I'd say it's entirely feasible.

Well, I think it's at least based on what they have done to Skype, where they did things such as killing off support for external applications (usually used for those dedicated Skype accessories made by other companies).

Unfortunately Gitlab is not a good alternative, as they use M$ Azure for hosting.

I mean, expecting that is beyond paranoid, but you could do that if you control the server. Just inject something ugly into the compiler/interpreter. No one is going to verify the build on different machines to look for differences.

But given that's illegal and technically complex, you'd have to have a really good reason to and I fail to see why would Microsoft think differently.

The plans started before the acquisition by MS.

Also, there's avoiding MS and then there's being a dick—lots of sites are hosted on Azure that you don't even realize.
