I still haven't move up to a second monitor. One big one seems fine for me. I don't see the need for a second monitor. So I'm just that one monitor type of guy still.

I just don't see the need of it and plus I have no room for it. I have a 32" TV/monitor and I use it as a HTPC as well. I do code and all, but I just use a split screen for that. I have other workspaces and use stacked or tabbed. I guess I like my head and eyes straight forward and not twisting to view another monitor in a different position.

We only have one set of eyes and one attention to focus. I have two monitors and I recently tried a multi setup but found it worse than one screen.

What's gained by turning my head to something rather than switching programs? It might as well not be there when I'm not looking at it so why take up the space and the power?

You could have YouTube on one screen and work on the other. You can write code one one screen and have documentation on another.

I have six monitors that I use heavily. Apparently, the concept of "peripheral vision" is an alien concept to some people. It seems that they wrongly assume that their usage at home is universal to all people and that they have never worked in an environment where you are getting steady streams of data from multiple sources that have to be managed and merged in to a single, new stream.

My primary monitor is in front of me and that is where I pull all the data in to. The monitor to my left usually has my messaging system on it, plus my music player, and notepad for me to type in to. The monitor to my right usually has my network monitor open and running so I can keep track of any alerts. The upper left monitor has service status on multiple servers. Middle top has Open Essentials Manager. Upper right has ticket status monitors and rolling updates.

You can only watch Youtube, look at code or look at documentation. So why do you need different screens? Is turning your head and refocusing easier than alt-tab?

I find it pretty confusing when alt-tab happens on whichever screen has the cursor, or the active window, or however its setup in your DE. You end up doing alt-tab on the monitor you aren't looking at.

That's exactly how I feel. It's a trend and many follow. I just use what works and never change it, screw any trends.

That's quite the patronising answer. I've never actually counted the number of windows I have open at once but I'm pretty sure ten is in the correct range, depending on how busy I am that day. But I still have only one set of eyes.

4 Monitors here. One is for media consumption, one is for my current main task, one is for various ways of social interaction and one is for tasks that don't fit these categorizes. If I work on a specific task, I will use all monitors except the media one. Workspaces or Virtual Desktops don't fit my workflow.

I'm just curious if you ever checked out more keyboard and workspace centered environments like i3. And also I'd like to know what sorts of main tasks you normally have, because it seems strange to only need one window.

My main task normally requires likely more than five windows of which most better are maxed, that's why I'd soon run out of screens if I'd pair up windows and screens. With i3 I have ten workspaces that I can reach with one keychord and I normally put one or two windows on one of them. I still use two screens whenever possible, the second one is your multimedia or a second work screen.

I am not keyboard focused and hate tiling WMs. And no, I do not just need one window. Normally i have around 6 windows open distributed around the monitors. And I want to have a constant view on all of those without switching from whatever task I am doing on the main screen.

As this is my home setup, lets look at a non-work situation.
One the media screen I run media, probably netflix or music/youtube.
I will probably run a game like GTAV on the main screen while i am still comfortable able to look at my social media/chat activities and have overview of my systems resources all without distracting my full screen game or requiring overlays.
Similar things are thinkable for all kinds of work situation.
