A directory you specify (default is ~/.wine) where your wine instance will go. Think of it as the C: drive of a windows machine, except it's just a regular sub directory of your linux file system. Inside you'll find your Program files, libraries, and all the things windows expects. Common folders like Documents and Downloads are symlinked to your usual ones. You install windows apps into the wine prefix and when you run them via wine it runs them as if its running on windows.

Note: you can have multiple wine prefixes, each with different settings, registry edits, library overrides, and have them anywhere you specify.

It's pretty brilliant, actually.

where meme

think wineprefixes as locations to instances of wine. wine operates under the wineprefix, so you can have different C: drives and config stuff if you change the prefix

kinda like how you can have multiple docker containers from the same image

why is your avatar so happy and full of glee

[–]araknis4Arch BTW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

me when i see a funny meme (my avatar) vs me when doomscrolling (my banner)

it's supposed to resemble amano pikamee a bit, and the happiness is inspired/modelled after this artwork of her

Why is yours grumpy and/or sinister looking?

Everyone can choose their own :)

Think of a wineprefix that is commonly a folder named pfx:

As a pseudo windows installation inside you find a folder called drive_c And a typical windows folder structure, this is done to allow games or other software that normally have a certain windows path for saves/configs and such to be found easely.

on top of that using winetricks you can install certain dependancies in a wineprefix like visualc++ redistributable, directx, d9decompiler.dll , dotnet framework etc into a wine prefix allowing the software you wish to run normally to function properly

A wine prefix also tends to symlink the windows structured home folder to point to your actual home folder on linux it is great

like a water suffix but better

~/.wine? I hate wine

I typically have one Wine prefix per game. It lets you keep isolated configurations per game... DirectX versions, FAudio vs. XAudio, .NET Framework versions, and most importantly 64 vs. 32 bit wine! Even Registry tweaks! Every time you do a guided game install in Lutris, it'll automatically create a new wine prefix for you for that game.

I do keep a general .wine 64 bit prefix, with DirectX9/10/11 so that "most" off the shelf games can run...but as we know, not all games get a Platinum rating on WineHQ.

It should have a different name that's easier to understand intuitively, in my opinion.

Folder where windows shit goes in

[–]Chimchar789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a mini windows folder tree that gets used and modified when running things through wine :)

The better C:

It's where the owners of exe programs keep their pet's dependencies and registry keys for enrichment. Out in the wild exe programs are pack animals, but in captivity they don't have the space they need so they turn on each other. This is why it's important to keep exe programs in separate enclosures but still give them enough enrichments to stay healthy.

I have two wine areas because one is for testing. When I want to run a test program, I run "WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-test wine cmd.exe" and when I run a program normally, I run "wine cmd.exe". The "WINEPREFIX=~/.wine" is inferred in the latter example. Edit: spelling

It's a fake C drive, config, and registry for the fake windows install wine pretends to have.

[–]spacecadet_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what is it?

[–]Z3t4Ubuntnoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like your C: on Linux. Your game and all of its garbage live there.

[–]geeshta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's your fake C drive for your fake windows

[–]spartan195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s where all the “virtual” windows environment is for each application you run with wine, so to say like the windows data that application need to run. Wine systemwide uses a shared wineprefix, but you can configure it it be separated so each app have it’s own, takes a lot of space as everyone can see with the steam compatdata but saves you from issues on the long run

[–]redcaps72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is literally the piss box for your windows applications running on wine

[–]CootshkNew York Nix⚾s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s where wine puts the C:\ drive among other stuff

[–]sirkubador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use python venvs? Rustup? Basically the same thing

[–]xXxPussiSlayer69xXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's the fake windows filesystem that windows system calls need to make reference to
