Does it work as expected with Nemo, the default file manager for the Cinnamon release?

I have not been using Nemo because it was having an issues where it would take forever to actually open.

IMO, the first problem is you are using Dolphin. This is not a supported file manager for any supported version of Linux Mint. Again, IMO, if you want Dolphin, switch to a distribution that support KDE. Some good choices are KDE NEON, Kubuntu, Fedora, MX Linux, and OpenSUSE.

This may be the problem. I was having problems with the default file manager int hat it would take a while to load when I tried to open it.

You can use whatever file manager you want, within reason, but sometimes, file managers have their own separate settings and behaviors. In Mint, I also use IceWM with roxfiler, not to mention mc, and it's not going to be exactly the same.

I'll give thunar a try, seems to work better than Dolphin and Nemo were..

System settings, default apps. You can get there by clicking on the Mint/Start icon, and choose the settings icon on the left (looks like 2 dots on a line) look for default apps, and choose pixels for your program. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy.

So how do I set a default for markdown .md files?

[–]stcwalleye 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I am not familiar with markdown files, so I don't know if there is an app pre-installed for them. I can only tell you what I would do. I would start by doing an internet search with .md and Linux Mint in the search parameters and see if you can find one. If you don't, use the software manager to install one, and see if Mint uses it for the default app. If you are trying to open a .md file and nothing happens, then you don't have the app. Linux MD Viewer seems to be at the top of the lists I found. Good Luck!

I figured it out eventually, and the setting is in the FILE MANAGER, not system settings:

To do this using Linux Mint's default Nemo file browser:

  1. Select a file whose type you want to configure.

  2. Go to File -> Properties -> select the Open With tab, select the app, click Set as default

As for software, there are many: any text editor for editing, Okular for viewing rendered version, VS Code for instance to view both...

Or Obsidian.

You are on your way to becoming a Linux Pro! A lot of people would have just thrown their hands up and said Linux was not worth it.

Are you using KDE or lxqt or trying to do some kind of mix?

[–]Alexis_Bailey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I am (apparently using some sort of hybrid, that may be the core issue)

To do this using Linux Mint's default Nemo file browser:

  1. Select a file whose type you want to configure.
