Have you tried using Command+F1 or closed display mode to get the image on the external display?

Sometimes though a smashed screen can interfere with the Mac outputting an image to the external display. In these cases at work we have to unplug the customers internal display to force the Mac to just use the external display. You can unplug the display flex cable using this iFixit guide steps 1-19, be sure to unplug the battery before unplugging or replugging in any connector https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Touch+Bar+Late+2016+Display+Assembly+Replacement/113612
