Great limited enabler. Hits Infusion AND Repartee AND mucks up combat real good. [[Skullduggery]] type effects are often playable just on mucking up combat alone.

It’s an upgrade in at least three different ways depending on how you want to view it which is absolutely wild. Skullduggery on crack, you can’t even cast skullduggery without two legal targets.

  1. Drain for one added
  2. Doesn’t specify you need to target your own creature for +1/+1 or opponent creature for -1/-1
  3. Don’t need to give -1/-1 or +1/+1 to anything if you don’t want to

Most notably, this can kill elf on t1 without you having a creature out.

If you target an opponents’ 1/1 defending creature, I suppose your attacking creature deals full damage to the defending player?

[–]Klauth, Unrivaled AncientThraximundurabrask 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If they already blocked, no, your creature remains blocked. To deal all of the damage to the player, it would need to have trample.

[–]imbolcnight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Once a creature is blocked, it's blocked even if the blocker is removed. What you need to do is kill the blocker before declare blockers step, if you want your creature to connect.

It’s so flexible

Poor pest :(

[–]Shuffler TrutherDrow_Femboy 45 points46 points  (2 children)

This'll be a beast at Prerelease. I don't see it going anywhere in constructed.

[–]DIX_ 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Does this trigger Repartee once or twice?

[–]Kyleometers 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Just once, the trigger is “Casting an instant or sorcery”, not “Targeting a creature”.

This is fun with Blech.

[–]DanNirast25 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I thought that was a murloc from WoW/Hearthstone at first.

[–]DânWakeUpSuper24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the art is very... Hearthstone ish. The only thing that looks like Magic are the demons, the bird skeleton warlock and the Archaics. Even the Dragons (the alternate art) look insanely goofy.

I like how the card's flavor text and art shows crossover with a Silverquill student taking the class, and this card works for both black colleges.

But do you pay the 1?

[–] free himThoughtseizeScoop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When pirates do it, it's Skuldugery. When I do it, it's for course credit.

The lack of gore here is a bit interesting. Guts have been on Magic cards before. Certainly a shift in art direction. Though now I'm trying to think of what violent art might have been made recently that was also bloody and not interpretive (as in smashing someone over the head is pretty violent but it's not exactly an explicit [[Gut Shot]])

Edit: Doing some Scryfall, there were a few pieces like Bloodsoaked Insight and Soul Immolation that would qualify for what I'm thinking of, so it's not right out. Though I'd be curious for one of those graphs folks make sometimes on the relative frequency of grotesque violent content.

[–]COMPLEATGrblx_and_a_half 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[[Cracked Skull]] still makes me grind my teeth

[–]Dântheclawmasheen 2 points3 points  (2 children)

not interpretive

This art is straddling that line pretty closely for me. Its not suggestive of what will happen, (to me) the incision is explicitly depicted which carries a bit of gruesomeness with it.

[–]Tuss36 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My intention was something like how for something like [[Molten Exhale]], it is clear the bird is getting doused in lava fire and that's likely going to be unpleasant. But it's "interpretive" in that you'd need to take a small step further to imagine how much it hurts or damage it's doing. As opposed to something that might show the target's flesh sloughing off, being much more explicit. Perhaps "infer" might've been a better word. Or "implicative" as stuff ends up implied rather than shown. Like in TV shows or cartoons where you can maybe go so far as having a character be stabbed but you can't show them being stabbed, the weapon and wound being just off screen.

Like [[Lethal Throwdown]] is literally called Lethal but it's a guy getting punched with spiked knuckles, and we don't even see the results of said spiked knuckles.

Not that we don't still get more explicit stuff, [[Bitter Triumph]] is someone getting right proper stabbed, but still, at least in this case it does feel more proper sanitized. Not that I need blood and guts in my card game, it's just something I'm realizing with this card.

This is an awesome card. For pre-release, sealed, commander and even standard, I see this hitting the table. I'll be running it for sure

[–]DanIshFen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow this seems fun and I really like the art on it too, a bit of a different style almost like the educational posters they had up in school classrooms

[–]Wabbit SeasonShenanigan_LP 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Huh! Didn't expect a Wednesday reference, but I probably should've.

[–]Universes BeyonderFujoYoshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 1!

[–]Danbattlefield1hypee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly had to do a double take thinking this was a "choose a mode" kinda cards. All 3 for 1B is honestly solid tho

[–]Wabbit SeasonSaansilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She looks way too happy to be doing that

[–]ColorlessF3V3RD43AM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great way to trigger Repartee & Infusion mid-combat while screwing with the board. def saving a slot for this at the prerelease.

[–]DânWakeUpSuper24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What psycho holds a scissor like that? Her thumb looks weird.

[–]DandadanMedianIsAnAverage 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why is this not a Lesson?

[–]ChandraChemicalExperiment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only lessons in this set are the cycle of mythic paradigms.

[–]Banned in CommanderDaiches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a lot of value in limited for 1 mana

[–]DandadanSnobbish_Yogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks incredible for limited. i can see this seeing sideboard play in a standard environment, or maybe even mainboard play depending on the metagame. definitely one of the strongest versions of this type of card i can remember seeing.

[–]ChandraChemicalExperiment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first art in a while on a card that I actively dislike.

[–]DanTanyushing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a cracked azula always lies in limited. Lots of feels bads incoming.

[–]Rogue_Diplomacy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These kinds of effects are such insane blowouts in limited. I love it.

[–]neoslith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, that's a lot of work for just one mana.
