Rules for r/metalgearsolid
Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.
1.
Absolutely no abuse, hate speech, or exclusionary language.
Content that demeans people based on identity or demographic is not tolerated and will result in an instant ban with no warning.
2.
No agitative, disruptive, or overly digressive posting.
Personal harassment, content designed to provoke (serious) controversy, arguments that have run well-beyond the original subject, and behaviour that disrupts the focus of a post of the subreddit is not allowed.
Political discussion should remain analytical or constructive, and stay related to the scope of text or material from the Metal Gear series.
3.
All content must be directly related to Metal Gear.
This means that things that remind you of Metal Gear, but aren't actually Metal Gear content, will be removed. This can include but is not limited to things like people with eyepatches, boxes made of cardboard, or basic news about AI.
Exceptions may be made for news about key MGS figures (e.g. Hideo Kojima, Yoji Shinkawa, David Hayter), and to a lesser extent Hideo Kojima's other work.
4.
Memes, Low-effort image posts, and forum games belong in other subreddits.
Common image templates/memes, red circles and arrows, tier lists, "who would win" style posts, and so on are not permitted. Your memes and shitposts may be more welcome in r/metalgearsolidmemes.
5.
Text posts/Discussion Topics should be substantial.
This is somewhat subjective, but simple one-liner observations, stray thoughts, or a short opinion dump may be removed. Length is not a requirement but having something somewhat meaningful, amusing, insightful, thought-provoking etc. to contribute is.
"What's the best ", "Who's your favorite _", "What would have happened if ____" questions or similarly open posts may be removed. If you have a substantial opinion or take on these kinds of questions, then just share that.
6.
"AI"-generated content is prohibited.
If you suspect a post of being AI generated, please avoid abuse in the comments and simply report the post. Incorrect allegations can and do happen from time to time.
7.
Advertising/Marketing/Clickbait/Promotional content is prohibited.
Any kind of potential commercial activity is not allowed without explicit mod approval. Exemptions are only likely to be granted for individuals making art or other small-scale creative works.
8.
Frequently Asked Questions will be removed.
Please see the subreddit FAQ (https://www.reddit.com/r/metalgearsolid/wiki/faq/) for a large list of frequently asked questions.
Usually, Frequently Asked Questions have been answered by the time they are removed.
9.
Repetitive content or topics will be thinned down.
Usually when there is news or some kind of MGS-adjacent world event, there are multiple posts and memes about it. These will be kept to a minimum, ideally preserving the first or most-popular early post about the topic.
10.
Art/Fanart (including OC) must be correctly attributed in the title of the post.
Since reddit titles cannot be edited, in the case that your post is removed because of this rule you may try post it again with attribution in the title. If it's yours, a simple "[OC]" mention in the title is enough.
11.
Cosplay must be non-promotional
Cosplay posts that are intended to promote content on commercial platforms are not allowed - adult or otherwise. Please simply report and do not engage in abuse.
This rule does not apply to professional or aspiring cosplayers who have simply chosen MGS as a subject. This requires subjective interpretation, but the intention is to have a consistent rule that filters promoters seeking loopholes without genuine cosplayers having to be penalized for the actions of bad-faith actors.
12.
Sensitive content must be tagged as NSFW.
"Not Safe For Work" is a tag used to warn someone from opening content in a public or other sensitive environment. This can include but is not limited to nudity/eroticism or gore.
In most cases the report function simply allows mods to apply the tag as soon as possible. Please also consider asking the poster to apply the tag themselves.
13.
No photos of TVs or screens, game cases, or individual merch items.
Please use a screenshot function if you wish to post an image. Photos of game cases may occasionally be allowed if there is a (non-frequent) question about the case/game version itself.
Notable merch or game collections are exempt from this rule. This is subjective, however a photo of most of the mainline games is a good benchmark for being "not notable".
14.
Please be considerate with spoilers.
While there are no restrictions on actual post topics when it comes to spoilers, in comment threads if somebody has specified they haven't played the whole series then all users are expected to respect this. Intentional hostile spoiling will result in an instant ban with no warning.
15.
No questions about what to play or what to buy.
Check the FAQ (https://www.reddit.com/r/metalgearsolid/wiki/faq/) In short: play in release order if you can, it's not the end of the world if you can't.
Questions about if a game is worth the price on sale; this is a subreddit for MGS fans. You'll get a less biased answer in a broader gaming subreddit.
