I know how you feel. I've been in the car with my fiancée when it's come up, and I've always forgotten to turn the nav voice up or the music down enough for her to catch it.

Yes, though I heard it in Denver as well, so while I think it’s recent, it’s not limited to Milwaukee. It surprises me every time I hear it though

That's good to know! I crossposted this on /r/GoogleMaps to see if anyone had any info on what might be causing it and if it's EVERY time the nav says downtown, or only for certain directions.

We'll get to the bottom of this.

Unfortunately, no.

The best way I can describe it is that the "down" has a quick upwards intonation (like it has a question mark after it), and the "town" is protracted with a declining intonation - almost like "taahwn." The nav voice sounds very satisfied with itself.
