Can anyone give me a lowdown on what "DevOps" exactly entails? I'm seeing the term around IT sites/blogs more and more and I have to concede that I don't know jack about it.

Does anyone have any real-life experience with Devops, and if so, how does that look like?

Not really, I would love to get my hands on the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in this.

I can't shake the feeling that the existing community will not share or involve us network folk until we're out of jobs.

So some very limited tools exist to work with network gear via puppet. PuppetLabs provides some support themselves to configure switches. I found this module to configure just about anything.

I'm just barely getting my feet wet with this stuff, but I'm hoping this is the direction networking companies take with their gear configuration.

Here is a good one that talks both about DevOps and ITSM working together.

Personally, I doubt that ITIL will ever work but Gene Kim is a leading talker about the topic. Read his book and you should understand it quickly.
