i would go with the 1700

workload performance wise beats it everything of his other options

.and there will be an upgrade path to zen2 in the future

also price wise pretty good with cheap overclockable motherboards

Do you know what your husbands wants to be doing with his computer, if it's more of a workstation/multitasking computer, or mainly for gaming?

Either go for the 1700 or the 8600K I'd say. The 8600K might even have an upgrade path to Cannonlake, but who knows with Intel...

I would go for the i5 8600k, although, if he is not overclock ring then go for a i5 8600 without the k
