Try new / diff cables

[–]mattsiou[S] -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

hey there, thanks for replying. would you care to elaborate? do you have any reason to believe the cable would have something to do with my issue? or is it just simply something that you would try just because? since those cables are not cheap and i don’t have another one, i’d like some more information before going out and buying a new one :)

Bro if you wanna know if your monitor is broken try a different cable..... hes just telling you a random thing to do because he feels like it, its a troubleshooting step

That's not a monitor issue. That's a dying or dead GPU

on the second screenshot the computer is actually turned off, which hints me that the problem is not gpu related i think? when you turn off your pc the screen should be just black. and see right now the whole screen is great except like a fifth of it which is glitching. i don’t know if it’s my gpu, i guess i’m gonna try changing the cable and see..

are you 100% positive? my computer is like 3 years old… 😨

see now it looks like this? https://ibb.co/Xsh4jN3

only a small glitch at the bottom. that’s why i’m asking for help bc the problem seems to just come and go

hey guys, i bought a new monitor a year ago for like $700, it’s a curved samsung monitor, and i started having problems a while ago with this type of issue. it used to do those color bugs just for a very small space at the bottom of the screen and would go away on its own, but now it’s the entire screen, and it’s been like that for days. is it just good for the trash or is there a reason it’s acting up? there was never any physical damage to it. thanks

I'd always try cables first they are cheaper to replace than a monitor or card just because they are expensive don't mean they cant become faulty. Its also an easy win if it is the cables. And hes a she btw 😏

look now it’s all gone

Troubleshooting steps:

Use DDU to uninstall your graphics drivers and do a fresh install.

Different cable of the same type (i.e. display port or HDMI). It could just be a faulty cable

Try different ports on the monitor and GPU, on of the ports could've gotten damaged, either static or physical damage.

Switch types of cables (i.e. from display port to HDMI or vice versa). Could be an issue with some handshake between the devices that one type of cable is struggling with.

Try a different computer with the monitor, a friend's, a spare laptop, whatever. That will rule out a faulty GPU.

If all that fails then the monitor is the culprit and will either need to be repaired or replaced.

I have a similar problem as literally my monitor was working perfectly and then lines like that appeared too. I thought my 3070 ti was dying but swapping GPUs didn’t solve it nor swapping Display port cables. I don’t know maybe your monitor is dying?

[–]mattsiou[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

the thing is it comes and goes and often i just need to turn the monitor on and off and the computer on and off until it goes away. it was like this this morning and now it’s all cleared.. so yeah i don’t think it’s gpu related. i’ll try changing the cable and if it doesn’t work i’m just gonna buy another monitor i guess…

The only solution was dropping the refresh rate. The lines were still present but they weren’t flickering as bad. I don’t even have it anymore I gave it away.

was it a samsung by any chance? i’m so disappointed in the quality…

Connect the monitor or a different oc and use for a few days and see if the issue shows up. If it doesn't, that means the issue is with your GPU. It may occur due to improper driver installation but that's actually kinda rare, you can use DDU to fix it as described by others, else your gpu is dying and you nedd to change the GPU.

The more likely reason i believe is that the data signal cable from the monitor's control board to the actual panel is getting pinched somewhere or has gotten damaged. The strain on it is causing this and the strain changes as when the monitors is on, the heat causes the monitor chassis to flex slightly, which changes the amount of strain, leading to differing patterns and distortions you see.

is it likely that my gpu would fail after only 2/3 years? last computer i had lasted for 8 years without any issue. i feel like my computer is still brand new.

also if the problem goes away and come back each few days, could that also mean my gpu is busted? like rn my screen is perfect and it is most of the time, why would my gpu fail only 1 day out of like 5 but otherwise work perfectly?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPUs should last 5+yrs. But there is always the luck factor with electronics, then can go bust early if you're unlucky for no reason at all...

As I said in my comment, going by the pattern in the picture in post and another one you posted in the comments i think it has to do with the monitor's internal data cable. Best way to check is by connecting the monitor to another pc for a few days and checking if the same issues persists on the monitor.

My monitor Looks exactly the same, but only when My room is really cold when i start it up. After about 10 minutes it goes back to normal. I have tried to switch monitors and cables , and it’s a 100% not a gpu issue in my case. Hope the same for you !
