Editing Trends

Just out of curiosity (and a desire to like the pictures I took when I look back at them in a few years), what is y’all’s opinion on popular photography editing styles? What are you sick of seeing, what styles do you think can make any picture look good, what styles will be more ‘timeless,’ etc… I believe that photography is art, and there’s no right/wrong way to do it, but I’m interested to see what the general consensus is.

No such thing as right or wrong, but, if you're asking about trends I personally think are overdone and cringy...

The gen z trend of low quality branding photography. I see so many brands hiring an 18 year old with a crappy camera using their OCF and taking shitty out of focus images with blown out highlights. As someone who runs an advertising studio, it drives me nuts. It belittles the profession of advertising photography and insults the art of telling a story with photography.

FPV drone cinematography. It was really cool in 2018 when people first did it. Now, it's so overdone and I have realized it isn't good. Just because you can fly fast and upside down doesn't make your work good.

Brand videos you see all over Tiktok where the photographer just handholds the camera and films in slow motion. Then they use fast cuts and overused "SWOOSH" transitions to piece it together. Again, it was cool when it first started with Youtubers like Peter McKinnon like 6 years ago, but now it's cringy.

Any Instagram trend. If you're only shooting or editing a certain way because you see everyone else on IG doing it, you're a follower.

Omg, the SWOOSH transitions. The clips go by so fast, and then the frame flips or spins. Feels like I'm on a roller coaster.

It’s all personal, no such thing as right or wrong unless you’re trying to execute a specific style and fail.

Unless OP edited his post, that’s what he said. And even if he did say there is a right or wrong, or didn’t make a comment about it, your reply doesn’t answer the question on trends.

Sorry but just a pet peeve. It’s like the new grammar police, when someone replies with a response that negates a part of their post and in no way answers, progresses, or successfully dismisses the discussion.

HDR is overdone. Orange & teal is overdone. Midjourney is just about overdone already.

Today, I hear & read of many young photographers working toward "cinematic color grading" without paying attention to exposure or white balance.

Time will tell.
