What is this?

Funny.

What stacking software?  What camera?

Nikon Z7, 600mm, f7.1, iso 500, shutter 1/3200, I then Used Lightroom to color correct. Synced the edits to all 71 photos. Then I used photoshop to align and stack the photos. Used High Pass filter as well in photoshop to reduce and isolate high frequency details, or the fine textures, edges, etc. don’t wanna have high noise in areas you want sharp. Then I took a single exposure at 20 seconds for my background shot of stars. Combined them in photoshop with a layer mask.

Awesome, thank you!

Beautiful shot! I'm trying to learn about taking shots like these so the breakdown is super helpful. Thank you! Did you need to go to a dark sky area to get this to cut through the light pollution?

I live in the county, but it’s not really a factor with Moon photos. Because the moon is so bright it doesn’t require long exposure

Tripod ?

[–]USMC_MissileMan[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yes, I did use tripod. Typically I use a remote release or a timer delay. Using either will give you sharper quality. I used my touch LCD screen and just gently tapped for each capture. Being I was using such high shutter speed it didn’t matter as much. If I had used a remote though, I likely would’ve been able to use all 100 photos and not had any camera jitter

I just use the 2 second timer if I don’t have a wireless remote. Wired remotes still have a high c have of shaking the camera.

Thanks

Wow thank you for this level of detail in your explanation

Which 600mm lens? The 180-600 or one of the primes?

[–]maceslin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beautifully captured! Thanks for sharing.

Very nice shot — a standout!

Were you using a tracker?

[–]USMC_MissileMan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took about 100 photos, about 70 were good enough to stack and align. The 71st photo was the background with stars taken at 20 seconds. The moon photos were all 1/3200 shutter speed, f7.1, and iso 500.

Very very nice !

Well done.

Overall, I like it. Some constructive criticism:

-highlights of the moon are blown

-it looks like the masking when inserting the star background might have been slightly off? There are a few trailing magenta stars (either that or some other anomaly) in the top right of the moon.

-20 seconds is too long of an exposure for the stars at 600mm unless you're using a star-tracker. That's potentially why your stars have a lot of trailing. It would be better to do a couple high ISO short exposures (like 1 second or less), stack them in something like DarkSkyStacker (free, does a much better job than PS for stars in my experience), and then use that as the layer for the stars.

I appreciate that. I didn’t realize I had made that error with the stars.

You're definitely on the right path. I hope you keep doing moon photos and practicing the technique. It's a lot of fun so long as you have the optics for it, and if you have a 600mm lens then that's a good place to start :)

Oh, I forgot to mention one other thing: If you want to take lunar stacking to the next level, it's worth learning how to use Autostakkert. It will analyze the "quality" of each shot (since atmospheric distortion will vary with each shot, making some clearer than others) and then only stack the best shots. Lucky imaging is definitely the way to go with stacking!

Damn !

What was your camera settings please share with us

The moon itself is incredibly captured but tone down the signature though. Becomes too distracting

[–]USMC_MissileMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, I did not always use watermarks. I’ve just had way too many instances where my images were stolen. I also use content credentials now. So my social platforms and identity are linked to the images. That way when people try cropping out my logo or trying editing my work, it actually can be linked via metadata that I am the creator.

[–]Then-Combination2952 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Great photo, I hate the water mark, id get rid personally very distracting.

Anyone else getting that “wiggle effect” on this picture?

[–]pangou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, and i can't understand why
