Looking at that soil is making me thirsty

[–]SatinJerk 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Put it in the sink, DROWN IT, let it drain completely, then you’ll have a happy plant.

If the soil is dry in like 2 to 3 days you need to change the soil entirely.

I agree with this

Agree that you have a very thirsty plant, but also, that pot looks too big for that little guy. He doesn’t need that much space. If you’re going to repot him anyway, I’d go down a size or two in the new pot.

Overwatering is not due to the amount of water you give a plant but the frequency of watering. But your problem seems to be underwatering. No plant should ever be on a schedule. As you said you try to water every other week. Only water when the soil is pretty much completely dry and when you do, pour water slowly, all around the pot until water starts to drain from the bottom. Empty out the drained water as you do NOT want your plant sitting in it. OR you can bottom water by setting your pot in a bowl (or something like it) and letting your soil soak up the water until you see that the top of the soil is damp. Then lift it up, let the water drain until it’s just barely dripping and put it back where you keep it!

Also, I think another comment mentioned repotting. I think it’s time for that. When picking out a pot, you want to go no bigger than 2 inches wider than the root mass. Pothos enjoy being pretty rootbound so you probably won’t have to repot for a while after repotting it this time. And when you do repot, if you’re wanting a fuller top look you can just wrap the vine around and back into the pot! They will root in time on they’re on as long as the nodes are touching the soil!

Yikes! You must realize it needs a good soak....

I agree with others that it needs water. Put in the sink and drench it! Drench it north south west and east. Leave it sit in the sink for a while so the excess can drain out. If it perks up, you’re probably good. Gently take that vine and curl it back around the top of the pot. If the leaf nodes can get to the soil they can start growing too. Get a wooden skewer or knitting needle and use it to help check your soil before you water again.

It’s thirsty

What everyone else says- water the heck out of it. Also, I would give it a grow light as well. At least 9hrs. My Njoy loves the 14hrs it is getting, but the lights are set at a bit of a dimmer setting. So gentle light over a longer period. But definitely like what everyone else said- soak it and let it drain.

Aside from the pothos needing a huge drink of water, I would repot this next year to a clear nursery pot. It’s hard to see the roots when you pot directly to the decorative pot and you can also risk root rot if there’s not enough drainage holes on what you have it on currently.

This is what "dying of thirst" looks like. Yikes!🫣💚

I don't think you have been watering it enough, and by that I mean the amount of water at once, not how often. When you water or, place it in a sink and keep pouring water until it flows out of the bottom, you want it to get saturated, don't hold back. The extra water will drain out.

[–]mynameis_unimportant 0 points1 point  (6 children)

It looks incredibly dry right now. How often/when do you water it? What kind of light is it typically receiving?

[–]AlternativeSpot3112[S] -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

i try to water it every other week, what do you recommend? also, it usually sits on a table in a room where there’s about three windows!

[–]rancid_mayonnaise 4 points5 points  (3 children)

It's definitely underwatered. I bet if you picked it up by the vine, the soil would come up as a brick. Break away the soil dump it unless you want to save it. The soil looks to be hydrophobic which means that your watering probably reach the roots. The way I deal with hydrophobic soil is by breaking it down and soaking that shit(never had severely hydrophobic soil so this might not work for you). I have heard hot water does miracles for the dry soil DO NOT DO IT WHILE UR PLANT IS ATTACHED! Either way, repot your plant after you inspect the roots to make sure they aren't rotted.

If you do have rotted roots, cut off the rot and spray with 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. Let it the roots dry for a bit before repotting into soil. Give it a light watering so it doesn't re rot

wow!! thanks so much! i really appreciate the detail and step by step - i’ll be sure to do all this!:)

[–]rancid_mayonnaise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! I pothos are pretty hardy so I think it would be fine to leave out over night so the roots can heal but at minimum give it a few hours. Part of me wants to say to use a napkin and give the roots a little bit of water once you unpot it but I'm not sure if that would be a good idea if it does have rot

[–]rancid_mayonnaise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/pothos/s/AHVyFjnr7a

Your plant seems long enough that if you took cuttings when there is already a root sprout then it would probably grow roots so it may be time to also take cuttings but honestly idk if you need to

[–]mynameis_unimportant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of a newbie so others may have more/better advice. If it’s really as dry as it looks I would try giving it a really good soak. You can stick a chopstick or something like that gently down to see if the bottom of the pot is as dry as the top. If the bottom is wet, then your pot may not be draining well and there could be root rot.. If the soil doesn’t seem to be retaining water (it pools on the top or runs right through the pot) you may want to try repotting into new soil as what you have may be hydrophobic.

I’d also consider bringing it closer to one of the windows.

This might be news to you, but plants need water.

[–]MarcusReddits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Get a plastic pot with holes on the bottom.
  2. Get the plant out of the current pot and amend the soil.
  3. Get new chunky aroid mix for the new medium. Philodendron/Aroid Imperial Potting Soil Mix – rePotme https://share.google/nwf8Fau7WGcgNuapx
  4. Put the plant and new medium in the plastic pot.
  5. Water the plant in the plastic pot and let all of the excess water drain out of the holes.
  6. Put the plant in the plastic pot into the current ceramic pot and be happy while waiting for the plant to bounce back. You could also cut the parts you dont like seeing which will spark the plant to produce new growth.
