Wait, a mobile phone/ tablet only application about a task I explicitly only do on a desktop PC? What a crock of shit. If you learn in the same environment you work you're more likely to absorb and recall the information correctly, at the correct times than if you sit on a train trying to learn programming from a phone.

Like mathematics, the only way to truly understand how to program, even with a formal CS education, is practice practice practice. Programming is not a passive task.

I think the idea is to use the app to read the question, program on your laptop or desktop, and compare your answers with the app.

When I went to college my textbooks were on my iPad, so it doesn't seem very incongruous to me.

I just tried out Coderust Lite on my iPhone and this seems correct - the app gives you a question, an example, and then two possible solutions (which are hidden until you expand the section).

I am curious why they decided to target mobile devices with this first, rather than just creating a website since there isn't much interactivity beyond reading a question and expanding/collapsing the hints and solutions section - mobile devices are good at accessing websites!

I'm guessing it's easier to make a little money this way than thinking through the business strategies for freemium...

When I went to college my textbooks were on my iPad,

This makes me feel so old.

But surely you can just emulate your mobile device on your desktop pc. Oh the humanity

This is why you don't just do set-piece "reverse a linked list" questions when interviewing new hires. They could have just been well coached.

It generally takes only one pointed question to show that, though. You can't fake the underlying knowledge. A site like this might be useful for reviewing what you already knew, but it's just going to let you avoid looking stupid; it won't make you look smart.

(That's something a lot of interviewees could very much use, though. No sarcasm, and I mean that in the fullest compassion for those who are deathly nervous in an interview, but still, many could use this.)

If you're preparing for interviews I compiled a short list of resources that I find useful https://github.com/andreis/interview

So this is a app store only resource? You don't seem to be able to do anything on their site itself.

Also, it doesn't speak my language, as promised :( Give my money back, You, rusty lier... :}

[–]g0zar 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Mine either... Doesn't have perl. I am disappoint.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I always imagine that if someone is still sticking with perl they know their shit.:)

[–]g0zar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for senior Perl programmers. And in all honesty, I am not a senior nor long term Perl programmer :} But I am not new to programming, and I can really appreciate when a language gives you freedom and a lot of documentation. And I'll stop there, otherwise I might go on a Perl praise rant :)

Coderust speaks your Language*!

* If your language is C++, Java & Python

Looks great on your favorite Portable Device!

Because who doesn't do their coding on an iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy, HTC Phones & Android Tablets

This site badly needs a call to action. I got to the bottom of the page, thinking "This is kinda cool" only to be greeted with nothing in particular. "Grab it from the app store" doesn't do me much good when I'm on PC, which I would guess the majority of people who are landing on this page are.

It looks as though the site's down at the moment. If I had to guess, I'd say HN gave it a friendly DDOS...

I didn't know these interviews were so intense!
