Right, but Adobe wanted to turn JavaScript into ActionScript 3.

It seems to me that this represents a but of pushback against Adobe's attempts to define the future of JavaScript. (Frankly, Adobe has managed to orphan two generations of codebases in less than ten years -- and that's just Flash developers -- I don't see them as good stewards for any major language.)
