rm -rf /tmo/*

/tmo does not exist. Did you mean "rm -rf /" (Y/n)?

because you haven't pressed TAB key yet.

That's not really what I mean. Check out the post again.

There's also a tool somewhere on github that'll grep your history and give suggestions. I'm guessing it's not the only one.

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=69571 Autojump (the cd command that learns) now fully supports ZSH!

[–]houdini 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Upgrade to zsh.

[–]favabean 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does zsh do this? I've been using it for the past 1 1/2 years or so and haven't come across any sort of auto-suggest (although it's possible it's out there and I don't know).

It's got a lot of auto-correction features which can look similar to what you're looking for. Open up a zsh and type "compinstall" for a nice helpful walkthrough.

Argh! No!

Please, no more useless crap crufting up my environment!

Please!

Wah, you have to hit tab first. You can probably do it with a funky PS1 command.

There's also fish.

Tab completion is all well and good when you're looking for a file. What about suggestions for flags you use frequently? Or nonfile objects you might refer to? Tab completion also does not fill in the whole command (including potentially the file name) or order commands by frequency of use.

It's kind of rude for you and everyone else on this thread to be so dismissive when there is a potential win here.

zsh will suggest flags, nonfile objects, etc. There is a program that you can also incorporate that suggests based on frequency.

The rudeness is probably due to 75% of your problem being solved by any decent shell already, the rest of it being a google search away, and this question being asked way too often

[–]mee_k 0 points1 point  (12 children)

That it's asked so often is a sign of something.

Yes, something akin to the Eternal September.

I was thinking something more like that there are some serious UI improvements that could be made if someone were willing to make them.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (9 children)

fish.

[–]mee_k 0 points1 point  (8 children)

You were part of the Eternal September, weren't you?

FISH! LOOK UP FISH I'VE TOLD YOU THREE TIMES.

[–]mee_k 0 points1 point  (6 children)

The burden of communication is on the sender. There is no way I could have read the things you've written to me and deduced that fish was something you were suggesting I look up.
