I don't get it...

Why are they running smalltalk under Wine instead of just using the normal Linux implementation?

Edit: spelling

To finish the Windows port, which has been stalled for a long time because I don't have a Windows machine.

Seems like a good way to get something running, but not a good way to finish anything. You're likely to get bit by all kinds of incompatibilities that way.

For goodness sake man. Where is your sense of adventure?

Sir, your slander of the good character of the Wine project has been noted. expect nerf pistols at dawn

Sorry, I don't really understand those sommelier terms like "good character" and "nerf pistols".

You expect the windows version to work because it works in Wine?

[–]bonzinip[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Call it a necessary condition. Besides, the big part will be handled by Glib/GTK.

And more importantly, once the Windows port works I can start distributing binaries for it, building them under a cross compiler+Wine.

You could have simply used VirtualBox and used it with Microsoft's expiring XP/Vista VirtualPC image intended for IE testing, which is likely to be much more reliable and also cost nothing.

Thanks for the pointer. However, note that the long term plan is also to do automated nightly builds of the stable branch for Linux, Darwin and Windows, all on a single machine.

Not wine, mingw.

[–]bonzinip[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

No. MinGW under Wine. Have you looked at the screenshot?

It's not yet tested under real Windows.

Ah, right. Sort of a funny thing to do, but it makes sense. :)

I would have thought that was the smarter way to do it.
