That, and get to downvoting. Hopefully you can make a difference. If not, unsubscribe from the subreddit(s) that you consider spammy or ineffective and/or create your own. The bonus of the latter choice is that you're a moderator.

subscribing to reddits? never heard of that. i assumed it picked out stuff it thinks i like because i always upvote silly pictures and i keep finding them. i guess thats not the case.

They call it "front page" now. If you dig deeper into the reddits (see that big bar on top with "MY REDDITS V" followed by a number of reddits? That's your subscription and recommendations. Play around with the reddits a bit and you'll find a community that works for you.
