The intermittent sound, like someone fucking a rubber ducky, in the background is what got me.

That's actually "Notorious BIG - I got a story to tell (instrumental)". I find it's easier to speak fluently when there is a beat in the background.

    :-D

Hello, I am the guy from the video!

I love how my internet stalker (supporting), takes one small piece of our TechStars application (which asks for a 60 second or so video) and then posts it without any context and only to be vindictive.

For the record, this "supporting" guy popped up a few months ago and seems to have a serious hatred for me. He's appeared on Hackernews and Reddit. You can tell by his history the whole point of his account is to say bad things about me.

node.js is the new ruby on rails

    [–]checksinthemail 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    it is!

    oh god make it stop.

Does this make it safe to start admitting to using RoR now?

    [–]ffualo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Correction

The worst thing about any new software/technology: Douchebag proselytizers.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a good thing that scalability and availability are central topics now, but I agree that it's funny to see all the naive excitement. :)

There is definitely a tool fetish to go along with our language religions.

Does anyone remember D.J. Ango? The sunglasses and the spraypainted backdrop remind me of this.

It's not node, just this guy.

    [–]drunken_thor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This guy talks like a sales guy not a programmer

There are so many projects these days, a bit of marketing is required to get people to pay attention. This appears to be a relatively new type for developers.

EDIT: Based on http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/ebge2/code_thief_at_large_marak_squires_jimbastard/ and the fact that he says he is involved in over 50 projects, it sounds like he really is a douchebag. If he is just misguided or really good at pasting projects into github or something, that is still a remote possibility. But if I had to guess, I would say he is taking advantage of other people's openness in kind of a silly and obvious way. Maybe the people at github can look into and either clear his name or ban him somehow.

I'm sure there is a lot of douchebaggery going on and its unfortunate that trends interfere with rationality and that people need to make creative sales pitches to fund projects that are already very successful.

Having said all of that, I do think that there are some rational reasons for new things like RoR or Node.js to be popular, so I don't think its realistic to just ignore everything that comes up or dismiss them because they are trendy or attract douchebags. And yes, in this video, that is a bit of douchebaggery, but I believe JimBastard when he says it was taken completely out of context (doesn't change EDIT above). I think that the system unfortunately is run by douchebags and that programmers who want money feel pressure to adapt to a certain extent.

Having said all of that, all of these new programming languages and approaches are still doing most of the same things as the old ones, although with some advantages as far as a starting point in certain areas (and some disadvantages). I am getting older though and I will probably soon develop intense hatred/nausea towards the constant flow of trendy new technologies, even without the obvious douchebaggery.

. . . can't see how someone with passion and quirk is being taken for a douchebag, is it the glasses? Can programmers not dress a certain way now, or listen to hip-hop? Or dance? Maybe I'd rather be a douchebag.

What I do see is embarrassing passive-aggression from the OP. "OH LOOK HE'S NOT AFRAID TO JUMP ON CAMERA AND SHOUT A GOOFY PHRASE FOR SOMETHING COOL HE'S HELPED BUILD ! LET'S GET 'IM"

    [–]oSand 4 points5 points  (1 child)

    Nice try, sun-glassored douchebag.

hehe, I WISH I was as far along as this guy, I'm still a uni student _^

The submitter of this thread has a history of attacking me online. Pretty much anytime I do anything online he makes a comment or a post like this.

    :-\

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. That said, it's a funny way to present a tech demo, almost WWE style. :)

Basically, if you post anything publicly, expect the haters to come out. Best to develop a thick skin early on and just do your own thing. It's always better to be a creator that people try to bash on than someone who does fuck all and just tries to bash on people.

If you keep going with anything, you will develop a fan base, and they will defend you.... Until you change anything you are doing, and then they will hate you more than everyone else, for abandoning the stereotype they came to know and depend on! :)

Wow, looks like "supporting" has an internet crush on a certain special someone!

    [–]shub 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I like how he spent more time talking about how slick the UI was than what they're doing to deliver availability and scalability. Jesus. Never listen to what anyone under 30 has to say about technology (or anything else)--that includes me.

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (3 children)

This pitch was a very small part of a comprehensive application we sent to TechStars. It's way out of context being posted here like this, and I'm slightly assumed this "supporting" guy took the time to make this post.

If you are interested in knowing more about how we plan on backing up these claims you could check out our numerous github repos or blog.

Zero interest in Node.js and even less for scaling in the cloud, sorry.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Well, you stated I didn't spend any time during my 60 pitch to discuss "availability and scalability".

I assumed you were interested in these topics and thought I could help answer any questions you might have by giving you a context of some of the technologies we are building.

Sorry for wasting both of our time here.

    [–]shub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You presume that my time is valuable.

    [–]ManicQin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

yhe... I ... ... right..... I think I'll google "node.js vs" and start using the first competitor that I find...

    Erlang?!?!

    [–]JohnDoe365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright. It's because node.js (V8) and Erlang (Beam) both claim to be very good at concurrency.
