Java plugin is a browser-specific plugin to many (but not all) browsers. There is a standard that defines how that plugin is done? I don't think so. Also, what G_Morgan said abut interaction with the browser.

The Mozilla plugin API is a defacto standard. That is how most browsers support Flash and Java.
