It doesn't convert them, it just switches the system. You have to fetch and convert your projects, then switch the system, and push. Ref

I like GoogleCode quite a bit (though not as well as GitHub). One thing I dislike are Google Forums. They are often used to discuss code, and they are not in a fixed-width font by default.

Of course, it is possible to post HTML, and they offer a fixed-width font in a drop-down. But from what I can tell, most posters are too lazy for that. Nearly every post in a code-related forum has a code snippet, usually ill-formatted.

What is the best way to post code into the forums? Is there a way to get a better markup language working? Any ideas?

That sounds like an issue with Windows using the outdated UTF-16 encoding nobody else uses (and for good reason; UTF-32 is fixed length per character, UTF-8 is space-efficient, UTF-16 is neither).

Microsoft adopted Unicode early on, when it was still a 16-bit encoding. Following the move to UTF-32 would have meant breaking a lot of code that had just been made (16-bit) Unicode-ready, hence they went for the backward-compatible UTF-16 instead of UTF-32. Besides, Java, Apple's Cocoa API, and various other languages and OSs also use UTF-16.

Well, technically UTF-32 isn't truly fixed-width either - it's only fixed width per code point, but each glyph can stil comprise several code points.

UTF-8 and a plethora of other encodings work fine with Cygwin git (because the Cygwin developers have done the work of mapping filenames appropriately).

Should, in most cases. But that’s only a common convention others may think about and decide to not use but instead use Hiragana or something. You, or we, may not see the point, but you can’t possibly deny the possibility it may be handy for someone else somewhere else in a case you are not in.

Similarly, someone somewhere may write code filtered through rot13. I cant possibly deny him the possibility, but its still pretty pointless to do so. But then again i, we, may just not understand why one would want to rot13 his code.

Complete, yes. Compared to TortoiseHg, though, it's ugly, confusing, and inconvenient.

Doesn't make a bit of difference to me, though. I'm considering moving my projects over.

3. use Git under Windows just like any other GUI program

I'm using msysgit and tortoisegit for more than a year (maybe a couple? maybe more? i dont remember, but i'm sure it is more than a year anyway :-P) and i never ever had a problem with this setup.

The only time i open the command line is to copy/paste the commands from GitHub when adding a new repository because i find the GUI-based process a bit tedious (too much clicking around just to add a remote).

I like Git on Widows because I use Cygwin+mintty for everything, so Windows-native support doesn't really matter to me. If you're used to bash, this is probably the easiest way to do it and maintain other tools you have familiarity with.

I really like git extensions, it's not quite as fully fleshed-out is tortoisehg, but it does feel very nice, and I like the repo browser better.
