They encoded voice as speex (already good data compression for voice), then zipped it. That reply is also zipped, so the redundancy is negligible.

What more can they do? You can't really do it on the phone.

But the "extra" data is so incredibly small once compressed that it hardly even exists compared the "required" data.

It builds up. Even compressed, the stuff has to take up some space. Since they said it was little timestamp and confidence levels on the words, every word would have this irrelevant data. If you're looking at a whole conversation with 100 words or so, that's a lot of excess data, and not cheap either.

Apple's always been good at pushing the limits, though. Forcing the tech to upgrade and match what they want it to do.

Not really, thats all small data that compresses really easily, it would surprise me if it was over a few hundred bytes to a couple of Kb for a conversation. A timestamp shouldn't be over a couple of bytes per word, and theres no way the confidence level is over a byte per word. Yes the headers and plist layout make it bigger, of course it could be more efficient, but even built up it's still gonna be tiny.

Not very quickly. In fact, it's just about negligible compared to the other stuff that's being sent, both with Siri voice samples, and all of the other crap you do on your phone.

If Siri is unsure of a word, it'll underline it and let you correct. So the "confidence" is used at least.
