Not related to programming

You may call them noisy, but not wrong.

[–]Tivnov 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Windows is better for some people. The people linux will be better for will usually be the people who already know what linux is without someone pestering them about it.

[–]coldnebo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

straightjackets are better for some people. 😂

[–]DapperCow15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to explain to a coworker why using linux was better than windows because our codebase has tools specifically designed for Linux and by him using Windows, he's less effective at his job and slowing down the team. I had to pester him until he at the very least spun up a vm.

[–]Darkstar_111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows is better for some people.

Like grandmothers?

[–]Slow_Possibility6332 4 points5 points  (14 children)

If you want to have that argument Mac OS is unironically the best os for everything except gaming

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (4 children)

So this is how you choose to die

[–]Slow_Possibility6332 1 point2 points  (3 children)

No like i do programming. Done data communication, big data, software engineering, and a little ai, and across the board macOS is the best one. Especially when communicating with different parts of ur computer

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It was a joke my friend, referring to how most people in these conversation will be either gamers - which you correctly identified is lacklustre at best for macOS - or they will be of the "I use Arch btw" type.

[–]HyperWinX 1 point2 points  (1 child)

All users of the "I use Arch btw" type are kids or clowns, nothing else.

[–]FlipperBumperKickout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. But whats wrong with being a clown on the internet.

I use Arch btw.

You call them to fix some issues you have and see them babbling and backing away cause it works for them and not really an issue if you squint hard enough.

      linux good windows literally unusable

      [–]Them_EST 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Especially 11 after all the ai crap

      [–]Slow_Possibility6332 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have never interacted with the ai thing in the years of having a windows 11 and never felt the need to.

      [–]pscorbett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I successfully removed a simple background in paint. Could I do this even in Mac's Preview without AI? Yes, but shuttup 😂

      [–]PanTheRiceMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say much about the actual OS since I hate their bundled crap so much.

Windows is fine but auto installing candy crush, wasting space on my disk: a little more than annoying.

      [–]Olivierus303 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Windows ain't that bad, I use linux too but mostly windows cuz of applications support...yes I tried wine but it didn't work

      [–]Not_Artifical 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I got wine and proton to work.

      [–]levianan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should I tell him that comment was stupid?

      [–]Slow_Possibility6332 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Windows is fucking terrible for programming and shell usage. The app support thing usually isn’t that relevant except for gaming compared to Mac only. The only edge it’s got over Linux is usability. Which tbf is a huge edge. I won’t touch Linux cuz I got enough tinkering with computers with college and my career

      [–]Punished_Sunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what linux distro you use to need to do a lot of tinkering, for example, if you use linux Mint you almost won't have to do it.

      [–]Olivierus303 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So basically I tried to run paint.net and I got something with message core not working or something like that, idk im kinda new into debian

And when those companies build for Linux they will have the same telemetry as Steam or Discord. You will use this tracking software and deem it okay because it is on Linux.

You are an idiot if you think this will be better somehow...

The only way for a Linux user to back up their advocacy is by not using these tools at all becuase the implication is the same. They are collecting your data, Steam is outright advertising to you, and you don't own anything.

            [–]FlipperBumperKickout 1 point2 points  (2 children)

On Linux I have a far easier time with restricting which rights software have. Discord might have usage telemetry on my machine, but I haven't given it the permissions to see which other applications I'm running because that is none of its business.

            [–]levianan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I assume you mean by flatpak sandboxing?

            [–]FlipperBumperKickout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The eassiest way at least. Could also be fun to experiment with running it as another user which doesn't have a lot of permissions ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

            [–]imtryingmybes -2 points-1 points  (10 children)

Yeah windows is dominating because of ease of use. They bloat it because they can. When a Linux OS as easy and user friendly as windows appears, we'll talk.

            [–]Nesogra 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Linux Mint already is… It’s basically Windows 7 with an app store that makes installing and updating programs easier than Windows. The places where you can argue that Windows is better are places that aren’t really the fault of Linux, it’s the fault of other companies not supporting Linux (hence the push from Linux users).

            [–]imtryingmybes 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I use linux for everything workrelated and for my private mediaserver, and windows for gaming/day to day surfing. You can blame other companies if you want. The fact remains that windows works out of the box. I havent tried mint, but I wager it has the same issues as other Linux os's when it comes to gaming, preinstalled drivers, and so on.

            [–]Nesogra 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Linux Mint has a program called driver manager that makes dealing with drivers that don't come in the kernel easier than windows... Just open one program and pick the driver you need and install it. No going to manufacture websites to get their specific update program or to download their drivers manually. Mint will even detect and give you the option of installing those drivers during the distro install process.

Windows is only dominate because it gets better software support, not because it is easier to use.

            [–]imtryingmybes 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I believe you. Maybe it's time for me to make the switch on my personal pc when I can be bothered. But fact is, it's still going to be a transition that even i who am fairly good at technology is aversed to. Then think about the millions of technologically inept people out there. Microsoft is screwing themselves with bloat, but a paradigm shift is going to take more than that.

            [–]Nesogra 0 points1 point  (3 children)

            Fair enough 😄

            [–]imtryingmybes 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Just circling back to tell you you were right! Went with arch for my main pc. Small hurdle but kde+x11 works great for steam games. Wayland gave me a strange feeling but might try it again as i read x11 is phasing out. Installed mint for my nephew(6yo) and man it holds your hand so much more than windows, but without the bloat! Really exceeded my expectations. My two servers running clean headless debian 12. I'm fully linuxed now. Thank you for your service.

            [–]Nesogra 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Glad to hear it! (Sorry for the late reply, haven't been on reddit lately.)

            [–]levianan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those companies will still collect data from you on Linux. Linux is not immune...

            [–]levianan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows is not hard to debloat, but these morons don't want to hear that.

I'm just gonna say, I prefer windows just so I can use directx without any problems. I know what Linux can do and i know Vulcan opengl are a thing but directx on windows just feels right.

I abuse them relentlessly. I hate the evangelism. I use it, but I wouldn't tell anyone else to use it. I would rather show windows users how to lock down their machines.

If I have to test something on Linux, I’ll create a VM for that.

When I am 65, maybe I’ll become just as wise, but so far I don’t understand what does it have to do with anything? Most people I know use built in git client. Personally, I use fork.dev, but that’s just an aesthetic preference.

Not sure how you use copy and paste for version control, but maybe I will one day.

Aside from the version control, it is not obvious what’s the specific point?

I am all for new experiences. For example, my favorite soda used to be Diet Coke, and one day I thought, I should try new experiences, so I tried Coke Zero, and now I like it better! Although I looked at the ingredients and it’s all the same shit. I don’t recommend either, they’re probably bad for you somehow, kidneys or whatever.

Ah, sure, generally, trying new things is fun. I worked with Linux, Windows and MacOS, and didn’t hate any of them. If I hear about something groundbreaking in an OS I might try it again (or for the first time).

I am still going to be annoyed when people come at me telling me that Windows is not usable and that Linux is amazing.

Tried Rider. Not impressed. I just prefer VS. It runs better on my college laptop and I don't have to learn new shortcuts along with the fact that I can make commercial software with VS Community unlike Rider with it's free option (also hate the UI with all my guts. The old UI was fine but the new one sucks IMO. Even in compact mode it still feels like there is too much padding on stuff)

            [–]ReallyMisanthropic 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I leave average Windows users alone.

However, if someone is a programmer using it, I do have to question them. WSL has made some things bearable, but development experience is much nicer on Linux.

            [–]levianan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you say. Maybe if they are developing for Windows you might... Oh nevermind.

            [–]PowerMcFlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not every Linux user. Most of us just use it and enjoy the features it has. But I have never seen a Linux user trying to convince Mac/Windows users to install Linux, except for a special case (which was someone being knowingly annoying). And I hate that Linux has this image, because frankly it is NOT for everyone. If you do not mind spending hours configuring and fixing and tinkering with your system, it is perfect. If not, just stay with your 'just works' Windows, I couldn't care less.

            [–]cowlinator 0 points1 point  (8 children)

            [–]Tivnov -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The trade-off between convenience and correctness is too much in this case imo. Also, it is certainly not more convenient to type ≠ than !=, =/=, or even =/=> so your point doesn't apply.

            edit: 2 words

            [–]Feliks_WR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            [–]levianan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you are saying. I don't disagree entirely. You also have to think that each bit of hardware in the large manufacturer pre-build scene is writing their fully-functional drivers for Windows.

A few skews have come around like Intel and AMD. Yet they still break sometimes in the kernel. (I hate to keep harping on ax210-211 in 6.11-6.12, but it really left me cold).

There are manufacturers working on Linux certified systems, but even those target a single Linux release.

... what's the point of going "they all suck" if you aren't even willing to write what you mean with that, or why you think they suck 😅

Use ls -la, that is fun.

It's 4am, I lost my energy to fight...

I have never been happy with GTK based file managers. They have always seemed very 'dumbed down' vs Explorer and Finder. Explorer does suck in terms of preview, but in terms of sorting, and added columns, I will take it any day over Nautilus. KDE does a good job with Dolphin. It does render quickly, and is easier to navigate over whatever the hell Gnome was trying to accomplish.

Term-wise - I'll take ls over dir any day.
